CSUN takes two of three to close out conference play

The Cal State Northridge softball team had another impressive weekend, as it took two out of three from the Pacific Tigers in Stockton. The Matadors and Tigers split the first two games on May 6, winning the first game 2-1 and losing the second game 6-1 before rallying to take the series finale 9-1.

Track and field has strong weekend as Big West Championship begins

Junior La'Shana Verdon won two of the three heptathlon events to claim the 2006 Big West heptathlon title while Brittany Ricketts and Long Beach State's Jamie Cuthbert-Allen tied for second May 7 at the Matador Track Complex. Verdon, who was in fifth-place after four events, took the long jump with a season-best 19-3.

Thousands of people crowded in the parking lot of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, May 7, to spend time with their families and have fun listening to top Latin entertainers such as Pepe Aguilar, Yahir, Reik, and Alicia Villareal. The event, which in previous years was held at Whittier Narrows Recreational Park, used to place a stronger focus on celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

I went to UC Irvine for my undergraduate degree, and majored in political science. I entered college via a community college, with the original plan of going to medical school and becoming an MD. I had done abysmally poor in high school, never thinking that there was anything there that I was interested in, but after working for a few years on an ambulance, I thought medicine was the way to go.

In an effort to expand financial aid programs through Assembly Bill 2813, members of Associated Students, along with the California State Student Association, gathered more than 160 hand-written letters May 3 to give to Assemblymember Judy Chu, asking for her support of the bill.

New A.S. vice president holds back to give back

Sarah Jackson, or S.J., as she is known to her friends, is a senior communication studies major who was supposed to graduate this semester; but she wants to give back what CSUN gave to her. So she plans to enroll in extra units next semester to be the new Associated Students vice president.

CSUN helps parents motivate their kids in school

CSUN and the Parent Institute for Quality Education started a three-year partnership this semester, providing a nine-week course to teach parents of K-12 students how to get involved with their children's school system and academics. Sylmar High School, Van Nuys Middle School and Sun Valley Middle School are the first three schools out of five in the San Fernando Valley area that will participate in the program, said Maria Elena Meraz, director of PIQE in Los Angeles.
