Smart guesses create schedule

Christina Eddings December 15, 2006
If picking the right classes can be tough, imagine how hard it is to make the schedule of classes. Many students have already registered for their spring 2007 classes. While some may be frustrated because the classes of their choice are full or the sections are unavailable, others-especially working students-may become frustrated because there are not enough classes offered at night.

HE’S GOT A TICKET TO RIDE

Esha Momeni December 15, 2006
Drew DeCaro is difficult to capture on film without a guitar. He always seems to have one with him, so it's hard to imagine him otherwise. In his final year at CSUN, the twenty-three-year-old Jazz Studies major commits himself to his role as musical director, lead guitarist, bartender, event promoter, entrepreneur, teacher and actor (the last talent could be debated, he says) with the same fervor which manages his upcoming 19 credit Spring semester.

Daniel Harju December 15, 2006
Entry-level salaries for tenure-track professors in different disciplines at CSUN vary by as much as $30,000, the 2005-2006 salary report suggests, a trend that reflects market forces largely outside of the university's control. Accounting, business, economics and mechanical engineering are among the highest paying disciplines, whereas faculty in the humanities and ethnic studies programs are among the lowest paid.

Going Pro

Dennis Mahan December 15, 2006
Taylor Canel, senior midfielder and co-captain of the 2006 CSUN men's soccer team, can't think of many things he loves more than playing soccer. It's the reason why he transferred to CSUN. He played at UCLA during his first two years in college, but he wasn't getting enough playing time.

The attack on Christmas

Daniel Harju December 14, 2006
While many good-hearted people struggle to figure out how to afford the necessary purchases in order to uphold good relations with family and friends, others express religious outrage about how a holiday that is significant to Christians came to be referred to as just "the holidays.

One of the key points it brought up was while restoring internal stability is needed, it will not be possible without outside help.

Rebound record holder strong in senior year

Ivan Yeo December 14, 2006
Teams that have tried to crash the boards against the CSUN women's basketball team since the fall of 2003 have had to worry greatly about a 5-foot-9 guard out of Lynwood High School who has been just as relentless on the boards as any other player in the Big West Conference.

Damien Rice’s sophomore album ‘9’ delivers

Liana Aghajanian December 14, 2006
Irish songwriter Damien Rice's sophomore album "9" is an emotional, ballad-filled record with substantial tracks that do not disappoint. Other tracks, thoughs, with their perplexed lyrics and awkward pauses, act as cushioning in between, hardly supporting the other well-written songs with enough padding to carry this album to its end.

Corporate work unkind to women in California

Talin Maghakian December 14, 2006
A study released in February by the University of California Davis on California Women Business Leaders revealed an overall hostile corporate environment for women in California. According to the results of the study, women hold only about 10.2 percent of the combined board seats and highest paid executive officer positions, and more than 25 percent of companies have no female board members as well as no female executive officers.

Social aspect of being a sports fan

OnTay Johnson December 14, 2006
Sports reveal a lot about the human personality, character and psyche. A couple of weeks ago, my boss, a UCLA alumnus, gave me tickets to go see a basketball match between UCLA and Long Beach State at Pauley Pavilion in Westwood. Now, I am not the biggest UCLA fan, but they have a pretty good team.

‘Off the Black’ examines the role of friendship

Liana Aghajanian December 14, 2006
Off the Black, a coming of age story about a disheveled and disillusioned high school umpire who forms an unlikely friendship with a teenager who is coping with his own distant father, is in the long term a major home run. Written and directed by James Ponsoldt whose credits include "Junebug and Hurricane" starring Janeane Garofalo, "Off the Black" leaves you both satisfied and wanting more.
