Softball team loses three to Conference rival Cal Poly

The CSUN softball team hasn’t been able to catch a break lately. After being swept last weekend by Long Beach State, the Matadors came back home and were swept again.

This time, Cal Poly did the damage, winning 4-0 and 2-0 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday. The losses dropped CSUN to 14-16 overall and just 3-9 in conference play.

In the first game, CSUN was held to just four hits by Cal Poly’s Eva Nelson. Cal Poly received homeruns from first baseman Shannon Brooks and third baseman Kristi Alvers. They proved to be more than enough for the win.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Cal Poly’s Robyn Kontra took to the mound and held the Matador’s to just three hits. Cal Poly scored a run in the first inning on a single to center by Lisa Modglin which was again more than enough to beat CSUN.

In the third game on Sunday, CSUN’s offense finally broke through, thanks to a fourth-inning homer by Jan Moshier, but were again unable to beat the Mustangs. Moshier’s homerun was her team-leading sixth of the season and tied the game at one.

Amy Jo Nazarenus’ run-scoring double in the second inning got Cal Poly on the board first. Then in the fifth, after Moshier’s homer had tied up the game and given CSUN its first run off Nelson in 11 innings, Cal Poly took the lead right back.

Chelsea Green, who led off with a single, was sacrificed to second. After stealing third and watching the throw sail into leftfield, Green came home with what proved to be the winning run.

CSUN travels to Santa Barbara to play the Gauchos next weekend.
