Georg Buchner’s ‘Woyzeck’ explores man’s endurance and tests limits. CSUN’s performance of ‘Woyzeck’ is a dark musical ballet, which comments on the nature of man, modern medicine and the effects of poverty. Director J’amie Morrison, takes us on an introspective ride into Woyzeck’s psychosis.

‘ ‘ ‘ Initially a dark and empty space, the stage is soon filled with set pieces, props and actors who seem to enter and exitas if appearing from nowhere. The use of projections was masterfully done. CSUN’s ‘Woyzeck’ effortlessly combines live action and digital media only to add to Woyzeck’s fleeting world and ephemeral existence.

‘ ‘ ‘ The cast consisted of actors, dancers and classical trained opera singers. Graceful whirling skirts and undulating bodies were not only visually stunning, but also emotionally stirring. They were a resilient group as well. Singing and sashaying for nearly an hour-and-a-half without an intermission.

The Captain, played by Justin Rabi, seemed to be the perfect villain. His obsession with slowing life seemingly in order to avoid death provides him with a motive, and Woyzeck, so eager to rush from day to day, has provided him with a target. From a lift in his eyebrow to the curl of his mustache, Rabi gave The Captain tangible life and a loathsome disposition. The actors were not the only ones pulling double duty. The show’s stage manager, Elliot Barker, not only provided accompaniment and called the show, but he also composed original works for the piece!

‘ ‘ ‘ Buchner’s play was left unfinished at the time of his death. Although various writers have attempted to tack on an ending, CSUN’s ‘Woyzeck’ was performed in its unfinished state. For the conclusion, you have to go see it for yourself. ‘Woyzeck’ continues its run through Sunday March 29. The piece was visually astonishing and emotionally evocative. Director Morrison, cast and crew deserve commendation for a most noteworthy piece.
