Embracing life through fear

Big Bear, the television show “Lost,” the U.S. road infrastructure and nyama choma, which is Swahili for grilled goat meat; these are a few of Doris Magiri’s favorite things. Magiri, a grad student in her last semester at CSUN, is a Kenyan native and has found herself a home away from home in California. She came to the U.S. in May of 2001 to pursue her education Magiri began her schooling in Mississippi in the summer of 2001 and met… Read more

Q&A with After.life director

Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo is the up-and-coming director of After.Life, her first feature film opening on April 9. In her first year at school, her award winning short film, “Paté,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2002 and, after being unsatisfied with the scripts she was offered to direct, wrote After.Life. She sat down to do a phone interview to discuss the film and her experiences. So, just tell me a little… Read more

President’s Report

Hello fellow students, This is Abel Pacheco with another update from Associated Students. Elections are coming up, and I encourage you to support the following referenda: l The GPA requirement for Senators will be raised from 2.0 to 2.5. This will promote a more responsible Senate that can spend less time worrying about a borderline academic standing and more time advocating on behalf of students. Your student leadership must begin to hold themselves to a higher standard. l The next… Read more

Student Government Elections? Who gives a %^&*?

My name is Dan Monteleone, Director of Elections of the CSUN Associate Students, Inc. Packets are available at the A.S. Office (USU-100) and are due March 3rd, 2010 at 4:30 PM. Daily Sundial endorses, ‘not with a bang but with a whimper’

This time in the academic year, as students eagerly await summer break, usually brings with it a self-induced withdrawal from all things “school” on the part of the CSUN student population. However, with higher  education statewide being threatened by unprecedented funding cuts, the CSUN community has kept a healthy buzz in the air by engaging the CSUN administration and state legislature in the form of marches, walk outs and town hall meetings. March 29 and 30 will be another opportunity… Read more

Spring election amendments

Students will vote on four amendments that may change the A.S. Constitution in the Spring elections this semester. Two of them were discussed in depth during Tuesday’s A.S. meeting. The first would change the GPA requirements for senators from a 2.0 to a 2.5. “”For those who can barely maintain a 2.0 grade point average, adding another responsibility, what’s that going to do to their grade point average?” Senator Alex Samovitz said. One of the senators against the amendment was… Read more

Any person can become a terrorist

It is not a race, nor is it a religion, culture, or single political affiliation. Terrorism can be all of these things, but it is a problem that transcends all categories. In these times of uncertainty, it is common to profile certain people, and label them as “terrorists.” With the recent suicide bombings in Afghanistan, and the threats at home with the underwear bomber, labeling people as “threatening” seems justifiable. This, however, does not mean it is right. By definition,… Read more

Common Sense: An extreme makeover: American history edition

Harrison Leonard Contributing columnist American History needs a makeover. Those who lament our current status as a military superpower often employ isolated examples from the Founding generation to “prove” that America was never intended to aggressively engage in foreign affairs outside of commerce. However, an intellectually honest examination of the Founders’ political maxims and America’s early conflicts provides for a more reasoned, pragmatic approach towards world affairs. George Washington’s 1796 Farewell Address is often referenced as one of the principle… Read more
