Matador freshmen continue to shine

The Matadors again received help from freshmen opposite and outside hitters Natalie Allen and Mahina Haina, who combined for 32 kills in a loss to Loyola Marymount University on Tuesday night at the Matadome. “The team needed to convert on opportunities,” CSUN head coach Jeff Stork said. “Them two are two good all around volleyball players.” Including the match against the Lions, the freshmen have combined for 290 kills on the season. However, it was not enough as they lost… Read more

Mattingly might be right fit for Dodgers

I don’t want to say they are forgotten, but it seems like the once-proud franchise of the Dodgers has made headlines for all the wrong reasons this year. With the McCourt divorce battle, which I think will play out for another year or two, plus the postseason failures the last few seasons, Los Angeles finds itself with a head-coaching change. Former major leaguer and current Dodger hitting coach Don Mattingly was named the successor to Joe Torre in a press… Read more

Forget Waldo, where is our education?

Lately, I can’t help but picture this giant, animalistic creature of barbaric characteristics stomping around California snatching each and every communitycollege and university in its path, ripping the foundations of these institutions straight up off the ground, and taking bite after bite before swallowing us all whole. As our pocketbooks have recently made us realize, a 5 percent increase in tuition fees for the Fall 2010 semester is only the beginning of a long journey backwards. We’re being robbed by,… Read more

Student shows appreciation to police by preaching

Marilyn Ee, a CSUN international student, has watched many cop shows, one of the earliest being “World’s Wildest Police Videos.” Ee has had an interest in cops  since she was 8 years old, she said. She doesn’t want to become a cop, she wants to minister to cops, she said. Ee, who is a 23-year-old Christian from Malaysia, said that in March 2009, she met someone who was involved in a ministry for cops. “When I found out about this… Read more

Letter to the editor

Dear Miss Jacqueline Espinosa, Though your article is both eloquent and precise, it only shows one side of the story. Unfortunately you did not take the time out to ask a student who has been homeschooled. Saying that home schooling offers “special needs services, (but if) a student (does) not fit neatly into the system (they) can fall through the cracks” according to your source, this is one source that associates homeschooling with special needs children or social inadequate children…. Getting to know your ‘green’ community businesses

This past Sunday, the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce held its first Sustainability Summit, providing several topics on going, being and moving to a ‘green’ lifestyle, but only as consumers but as a community. One thing is for sure when it comes to sustainable businesses. It is about the 3Ps – people, planet and profits. Fair Trade is a perfect example in dealing with the right people in honest ways. Some businesses might not be Fair Trade but they are… Read more

CSUN professors say nation’s economy will ‘continue to grow, just not as robustly as it has in the past’

It should be no surprise to anyone that the economy is not at its best. With all the jargon about the Federal Reserve and banks, and the new health care plans, it is enough to make anyone confused about what is going to happen. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate for July was 9.5 percent, which was unchanged from June and virtually unchanged from a year before when the rate was 9.4 percent. Adam Gifford,… Read more
