A.S. gives money for the completion of a Torah

CHABAD, a Jewish student-run organization at CSUN, received a $2,000 allocation from A.S. for the completion of a Torah, a scroll that has the five books of Moses handwritten on parchment paper. Jessica Krotin, 23, psychology major, addressed Senate members Tuesday during A.S. open forum and said it would be an honor for A.S. to provide money toward the completion of the Torah. “The Torah represents the soul of Judaism,” Krotin said. “A.S. represents the students on campus, so them… Read more

Black Friday attracts CSUN students to holiday deals, despite economy

In social media today, Black Friday is associated with shopping, sales, long lines and chaos. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season. “Last year was the first year I went shopping on Black Friday and I’m definitely going to wake up early on Friday to go again,” said Alexander Lasana, sociology major. “I can’t wait to get to the mall.” Some students will not allow financial challenges or the craziness of the… Read more

CSUN men’s basketball familiar with Hokies

For the third time this season, CSUN will face an opponent from one of the six major college conferences as the Matadors open the 76 Classic against Virginia Tech Thursday afternoon at the Anaheim Convention Center. This will be the first time in school history that Northridge (1-2) faces the Hokies (2-1) and a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference. For Matador seniors Lenny Daniel and Rashaun McLemore, the game against Virginia Tech will be special, as they both resided… Read more

Donations from Unified We Serve’s food and clothing drive helps families during Thanksgiving

Unified We Serve’s food and clothing drive collected donations on the steps of the Oviatt Library last week to help families in need around the Thanksgiving holiday. On Saturday, local families were able to  go to Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND), a privately funded facility that provides emergency food, clothing, medical, vision, dental care and job placement services to struggling families in Pacoima, to receive packages of food and clothing for their families. Justin Weiss, CSUN’s Unified We Serve coordinator, said… Read more

New and improved Vick deserves MVP

The 2010-11 National Football League season has been filled with unpredicted results. Many underdog teams have drawn favorable results against top teams, winning in very convincing ways. That being said, many top teams have also taken care of on-field business. They have beaten teams they’re supposed to beat without much of a competition. One of the surprises of the season has been Michael Vick. You might remember him as the immature quarterback turned ex-convict for running an illegal dog-fighting… Read more

CSUN women’s basketball returns home from winless Hawaii trip

The CSUN women’s basketball team was unable to come out with a win over the weekend as it lost all three games by double digits in the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Matadors saw themselves matched up against Hawai’i in the first game of the tournament, and even though Northridge held the host team to only 38.2 percent shooting, they couldn’t win, losing 66-58. Part of the reason the Matadors lost, despite holding the Warriors to a… Read more

Letter to the editor

The longer a student will stay at CSUN, the more she will pay. Here is why. California is a state in denial. We are forever blowing financial bubbles; we indulge short-term speculation and forego long-term investment. We borrow beyond our means, betting on suckers to buy our follies. Then when bubbles burst and taxes topple, we cry, “We were bamboozled!” CSU is in denial, too. We cannot call the thing that students pay /tuition/, though each year they pay more… Read more

Singing the Libertarian Party blues

With the recent midterm elections now behind us, I’ve been thinking a lot about competing concepts in the application of ideology. You know, the whole “principle versus pragmatism” debate. On Nov. 2, my Libertarian Party performed about as well as expected (i.e., no one of significance was elected). It certainly makes one reassess under which umbrella one’s political convictions can be best utilized. But I hate Democrats, and I just can’t stomach the thought of registering Republican. I’m politically homeless;… Read more

Online classes not for all students

With online classes becoming more popular, some students might be unsure about whether they should take an online course or stick with the traditional in-class lecture. If a student is independent, disciplined or just busy with school, work, or both, an online course might be the best option for that individual, said Kimberly Wells, a CSUN online professor. “It’s really student centered,” said Wells, who teaches business communications and intermediate composition. “It’s based on that individual and on the learning… Read more
