Olea goes the distance for success

Juan Olea paused when asked to describe his most memorable moment as a CSUN athlete. It took some minutes, but he was finally able to find a good story. It was October 2008 and Olea was participating in a cross country competition at Cal State Bakersfield. It was extremely hot and windy, but there was no cancelling the meet. With the 8k run coming to an end, and Olea in second place with about 700 meters to go (a bit… Read more

CSUN students honored with Rosebud awards at CSU Media Arts Festival

Eight CSUN students took home honors at the annual California State University (CSU) Media Arts Festival in early November. The festival, which took place at CSU Fullerton Nov. 6, recognizes the work of students in media arts programs throughout the CSU system. Jamie Yukich, a senior film production major, won for his film, “Sheeps and Wolves.” “The short idea is that two friends decide to go rob an ex-classmate’s home during his funeral,” he said of the dark comedy, which… Read more

“The Reconcilers” displays great art but has a complicated storyline

Graphic novel “The Reconcilers” delivers a story that is unique in delivery but difficult to keep up with due to its complex details and facts. The creators of the novel are a team of comic-book veterans that include writer Erik Jensen, Neal Adams, and artist Shepherd Hendrix. Set in the year 2165, “The Reconcilers” offers readers a futuristic view of the world and the dark age that results from corporate takeovers. An anarchist’s paradise, the society described in the graphic… Read more

Kevin Spacey makes “Casino Jack” a movie worth seeing

Very few actors can capture compelling, conniving characters effectively. Yet Kevin Spacey succeeds once more in a memorable performance as Jack Abramoff in “Casino Jack.” Like Humphrey Bogart, Alec Guiness, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro before him, Spacey has seamlessly transitioned from celebrated character actor to Academy Award–winning superstar. “Casino Jack” was inspired by true events as lobbyist Abramoff and his business partner Michael Scanlon (Barry Pepper) sprouted as worldwide-headline sensations after a disastrous scandal… Read more

Leaving negative past behind

During her years in grade school, no one would have expected 21-year-old Moranda Glasper to be at the point she is now. As a fourth-year graduating senior at CSUN, she has excelled and done more than be a student. Growing up as a typical trouble maker, she ditched school, pretended to be sick and became fairly well acquainted with the principal’s office. This changed when she started middle school, when she had a complete turnaround. Her grade point average skyrocketed… Read more

Clearing up misconceptions about campus living

As a dorm resident, there are a number of things I find CSUN students presupposing about the residence halls. Before you decide to either stay at the dorms or leave, make sure you don’t believe one or more of these misconceptions. The Resident Advisors are out to get you RAs are obligated to enforce some rules to the best of their abilities. No smoking within 30 feet of a building, no underage drinking, and no disturbances after quiet hours are… Read more
