Track and field

The Cal State Northridge track and field women’s and men’s teams finished up a busy week when they participated in the Texas Relays, UCLA’s Rafer Johnson/ Jackie Joyner-Kersee invitational and Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.

At the Texas Relays, jumper Thomas Johnson matched his career-high of 6 feet, 10.75 inches to finish third. At UCLA, Northridge’s group of pole vaulters had a good week as Tiana Webberley reached her lifetime-best on the women’s side with a clearance of 12 feet, 8.75 inches, finishing first in the open division. Tyler Woodard led the men’s vaulters with a season best of 15 feet 7 inches, leaving in a second place tie with teammate Matt Todd.

Tennis

The CSUN women’s tennis team (13-9, 2-5 BWC) lost 5-2 to No. 60 UC Irvine on Saturday at Matador Tennis Complex despite Brooke Doane’s fifth-straight singles match win at the No. 1 draw, winning in straight sets.

Doane defeated Courtney Byron 7-5, 7-4  and CSUN’s Anna Yang also had a win in straight sets at the No. 6 draw against Hayley Young, improving to 7-4 on the season.

Maria Pistalu and Doane won at the top-seeded draw, but suffered losses at both the two and three doubles matchups in close defeats.

Softball

The Cal State Northridge softball team (14-24)(2-4) lost 6-2 to Long Beach State as well as the series 2-1 in the final of the a three-game Big West series Sunday.

The Matadors scored first with two outs in the first as Mikayla Thielges doubled to left field and Tracy Allen drew a walk. That brought up Madeline Sale who singled down the right field line to score Thielges.

However the 49ers would answer just as quickly with a two-out two-run home run off Hannah Fraijo in the first inning and added two more runs in the second, never giving up the lead after that.
