Study finds more Latinos enrolling at colleges

Latino college enrollment increased 24 percent from 2009 to 2010, making them the largest 18-to-24-year-old minority group on university campuses, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. “We all need to be educated,” said student Matthew Alcantara, 21. “With Latinos being a majority now, I think that’s great.” Alcantara, a health administration major, is the first one in his family to go to college. W-Vball: Matadors win two out of three at UNLV Invitational

The Matadors played for keeps in Sin City. With a well-balanced attack, the CSUN women’s volleyball team was able to defeat UNLV in five sets in the final match of the UNLV tournament. Sophomore Mahina Haina and freshman Casey Hinger led the team with 15 kills each. Redshirt sophomore Britney Graff and sophomore Natalie Allen also contributed, with 12 and 11 kills respectively. An early two-goal lead wasn’t enough to hand the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team its second win of the season as they opened the Boilermaker Challenge with a 2-2 draw against host Purdue on Friday night. With a header in the 90th minute, midfielder Yardun Azulay and the Matadors drove the nail in the coffin against Missouri State, as CSUN (2-2) opened the TLC Lobo Invitational with a 3-0 win over the winless Bears (0-4) Friday afternoon. CSUN police arrest former student charged with dorm burglaries

Former CSUN student Christian Hunter-Sheppard, 20, was arrested July 20 on suspicion of burglarizing 22 dorm rooms between October 2010 and April 2011, according to CSUN police officials. Hunter-Sheppard has been charged with five felony counts of burglary and one misdemeanor count for possession of a loaded handgun found in his car during a police search, said Christina Villalobos, spokeswoman for CSUN police. The matador statue was unveiled Thursday to a backdrop of student protesters. “If CSUN can make the effort to find alternatives for funding, why can’t they put that same effort to fund classes?” said Cathie Pacheco, student organizer for Students for Quality Education (SQE).
