Softball: Matadors aim for first win at NFCA Cathedral City Classic

Following an exhibition contest against USSSA Pride, a team from the Pro Fastpitch league, at Matador Diamond Tuesday, the Matadors will regroup once again and attempt to get their first win of the season at this weekend’s NFCA Cathedral City Classic.

The Matadors begin the weekend with a doubleheader today against Boise State and Texas. They’ll face Iowa and Cal on Saturday and wrap it up Sunday against San Diego State.

While the exhibition game Tuesday was more of a fun community event, CSUN is in an alarming funk to start its season. The Matadors are 0-10 and have been outscored 104-17 in the losses. They’ve been shut out four times and aside from a 12-9 loss to Utah State Friday, they have been overmatched in every game.

Granted, the Matadors’ schedule hasn’t been the easiest. CSUN’s faced multiple nationally-ranked teams during that 10-game stretch. This weekend won’t be the exception to the rule as Texas is ranked No. 8 and the Golden Bears come in as the top-ranked team in the country.

CSUN, who’s led by catcher Mikayla Thielges’ three home runs and five RBI, has a slugging percentage of .281 this season. While its offense still needs work, defense is definitely a bigger concern. The Matadors’ opponents have accumulated 106 hits on them and their slugging percentage is a startling .586.
