In the four years CSUN guard Vinnie McGhee has been with the Matadors, he’s been part of many memorable games, but what transpired Saturday was a night he would like to forget. In what likely was the worst half in the program’s history, CSUN (7-18) collapsed in the second twenty minutes of Saturday night’s BracketBuster match against Fresno State(12-14), only making two baskets and shooting nine percent from the field en route to a 62-49 defeat at the Matadome. Josh Greene didn’t choose the forget-and move-on route after Cal Poly crushed his Matadors by 46 points in a televised game last month. Instead, the sophomore guard took the embarrassing loss as a sign of disrespect. “When we come out to play (Cal Poly), it’s personal, especially for me,” Greene said. “To be honest, I felt disrespected.” “Hopefully we take this game personal and we come out and do to them what they did to us.” Greene and the Matadors… Read more

It couldn’t get any worse than a 46-point blowout at Cal Poly on Jan. 26. Wrong! The Matadors somehow managed to top their embarrassing defeat to the Mustangs this past week with two grueling losses in the Bay Area, both painful in their own way. First, CSUN fell to the laughing stock of the Big West Conference, UC Davis, a team that snapped an 18-game losing streak on Thursday. It only got worse at Stockton on Saturday. Earlier in the… Read more

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Instead of taking the moral victory against the top team in the Big West Conference, CSUN was thinking of what could have been. With the game tied at 54-54 and a little over nine minutes left in regulation Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid, the young Matadors had the first-place 49ers on the ropes. Two years ago, the Matadors had an overall record of 11-21, their worst season under Bobby Braswell’s 16 years as head coach. Throughout that 2009-10 season, Braswell lost patience with the lack of leadership and chemistry the team displayed. With 17 games gone by, this year’s Matadors, who have a record of 5-12, are on pace to finish with more than 21 losses. To make matters worse, CSUN lost by 46 points to Cal Poly Saturday and allowed the Mustangs… Read more

Men’s basketball: Terrible offense renders defense irrelevant

Head coach Bobby Braswell, middle, has yet to figure out how to get his team going offensively.

CSUN head coach Bobby Braswell has always preached to his team that if you play defense, the offense will come later, but with 17 games gone by, the Matadors’ offense has yet to be seen. “You just keep preaching it, you keep doing it,” said Braswell after his team’s poor offensive performance paved the way to yet another loss at UC Santa Barbara Thursday. “You have to have some resistance and keep playing with heart. Keep fighting and keep believing… Read more
