Election commission begins to notice political blogs

The great American conversation over campaign finance reform has gone a bit stale since the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act went into effect in 2002. That revolutionary reform plan, devised by Sen. John McCain(R-AZ) and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), pretty much changed how politics was done during the 2004 elections, stimulating a surge in the creation of Political Action Committees and other “officially non-partisan organizations” like MoveOn.org and American Coming Together. To find the next wave of “progressive” campaign finance… Read more

A.S. candidate slates encourage divisiveness

There has been a noticeable lack of campaign advertisements on display around campus for next Tuesday and Wednesday’s Associated Students election. I’ve seen ads for the election itself, where to go, how to vote, etc. But I haven’t seen any campaign ads for specific slates of candidates looking for my vote, which is a bit unusual, not to mention fantastic. Officially recognized A.S. slates represent everything I dislike about A.S, and even though next week’s election has seen a drastic… Read more

Pro sports loses out to the college game

I don’t purport to know a heck of a lot about sports, but anyone can see that the past two weeks of college basketball have been, simply put, amazing. As sports pundits across the backs of newspapers have been cheering about all week, the men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament has been arguably the most exciting in the last couple of decades, maybe ever. Just last weekend, three of four regional final games went into overtime, and since the… Read more

TV show about Iraq just might be a hit

It’s been three and a half years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, and it’s amazing to me that there hasn’t been a movie made about it yet. NBC and ABC are both in development of big-time miniseries about the circumstances leading up to the attacks as detailed in the 9/11 Commission Report. In keeping with Hollywood tradition of doing the sleaziest thing possible, however, it’s more than a little surprising that Jamie Kennedy has yet to star in… Read more

Redistricting is a truly noble effort

Every now and again, a politician steps forward with an idea that has all the makings of an honest, nonpartisan solution to a great American problem. Sen. John McCain and Sen. Russ Feingold got pretty close to this ideal situation with their joint campaign finance reform efforts in 2001. Regrettably, that doesn’t happen too often. More often that not, politicians are stuck on either the winning or losing sides of the aisle, and when it’s the losing side, they often… Read more

Good politics make bad policy for Bush

T here are some actions that the Bush administration takes that are just so idiotic, so self-defeating, and so harmful that the liberal media really doesn’t even need to spin it to make it sound bad. The Associated Press version paints the entire picture, and to report it with a negative slant would just be redundant. Seventeen former Gulf War American prisoners of war appealed last week to the U.S. Supreme Court so that they could collect nearly $1 billion… Read more
