Weekly Column: Taking one too many shots: OKC guard Westbrook should leave scoring duties to Durant

Coming off back-to-back victories against the Denver Nuggets and New Orleans Hornets in which the Oklahoma City Thunder’s one-two punch of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 91 and 62 points respectively, one thing was proven for sure: Westbrook shoots the ball too damn much. Durant, who’s currently third in the league in scoring, averaging 27.7 points per game, scored the most in that two-game stretch, but didn’t take the most shots. Though Westbrook tallied an impressive 71 points… Read more

The Matadors (4-8, 2-6 MPSF) failed to earn their first win on the road Wednesday night as UCSB beat them 3-0 at Rob Gym. The Matadors are 0-6 away from the Matadome. Northridge, which also lost on Saturday against Stanford, finished the game with 31 kills compared to the Guachos’ 42. CSUN hit .200 percent while UCSB fared slightly better by having a hitting percentage of .213. The Matadors were led by freshman opposite hitter Julius Hoefer, who had 11… Read more

Weekly Column: Melo can’t co-exist with Lin

Carmelo Anthony grimaces after suffering an injury during a Feb. 6 game against the Jazz. Anthony’s injury gave previously-unknown guard Jeremy Lin a chance to run the show in New York. Lin’s had huge success so far. Photo courtesy of MCT

With the emergence of Harvard University’s Jeremy Lin, the New York Knicks have a problem: Is the team big enough for three stars? Because it’s already not big enough for two. Last season, the Knicks made a blockbuster trade that sent Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov, Danilo Gallinari, a first-round pick, two second-round picks and $3 million for Carmelo Anthony, Shelden Williams, Chauncey Billups and Renaldo Balkman. While appealing on paper because it allowed Melo and fellow All-Star forward… Read more

Weekly Column: Definitely Brady: Patriots QB cements rank as greatest in the NFL

Sunday’s Super Bowl, which is a rematch of the Giants’ 2008 upset victory over the then-18-0 Patriots, raises one question: can Tom Brady exact his revenge and bring home a fourth championship? The answer, undeniably, is yes. Not only has Brady played with a chip on his shoulder his entire career due to being drafted in the sixth round, but he also has a superb clutch gene, as he’s led his team to 24 fourth-quarter comebacks. Oh yeah, and there’s… Read more

Unit caps make it difficult for students to add classes

CSUN students are now facing the consequences of last semester’s decision to restrict student registration and lower the amount of available seats in classes to avoid a $7 million penalty from the CSU. CSUN, which is only allowed to exceed full-time student enrollment by 3 percent, was operating at 6.3 percent over its capacity in the fall, said Vice Provost Cynthia Rawitch in an interview with the Sundial in November 2011. If the same capacity level had been maintained, the… Read more

Men’s basketball: Matadors collapse during winter break

fdafasdf

Adding to their winter woes, the Matadors broke down both offensively and defensively and lost by their biggest margin yet as they fell 100-54 against the Mustangs Saturday night at Mott Gym. Cal Poly’s relentless 3-point barrage, which cut through CSUN’s defense like a hot knife through snow, was a perfect 11-of-11 at halftime where the Mustangs led by 27. Cal Poly finished the game shooting 15-of-21 from behind the arc, and shot nearly 61 percent from the field for… Read more

Women’s basketball: Matadors go 3-0 in Big West in win over Long Beach State

asdfadsf

For the third game in a row, the Matadors (8-7, 3-0 Big West) used lockdown defense to amend for their offensive struggles in a 57-50 victory over Long Beach State (7-9, 2-1) Saturday night at Walter Pyramid Arena. Despite scoring 57 points, CSUN held the 49ers to 34 percent shooting and caused them to turn the ball over 26 times, accumulating 12 steals (seven by freshman guard Ashlee Guay) and six blocks. “We all played extremely well,” CSUN sophomore guard… Read more
