Former NBA head coach Reggie Theus hired by CSUN

>>This article has been updated with additional information.

According to CSUN Athletic Director Dr. Brandon Martin’s twitter account, Reggie Theus has been hired by CSUN to lead its men’s basketball team.

“Theus is undoubtedly a winner, exceptional leader, mentee of Rick Pitino, and a leader of men,” was tweeted by @CSUNAD. Dr. Martin then tweeted a minute later, saying “What a great addition to the Matador Family!”

Former Sacramento Kings and New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus has been chosen to replace Bobby Braswell as the Matadors men’s basketball coach, according to ESPN.

Theus was one of numerous candidates that was rumored to be considered for the job, including UCLA top assistants Scott Garson and Phil Matthews, Cal State Dominguez Hills head coach Damaine Powell and Gonzaga assistant Donny Daniels.

Currently the head coach for the Lakers’ developmental league affiliate Los Angeles D-Fenders, Theus has experience as both a player and coach in the NBA and college and brings in a coach who has been successful in both leagues, something that Martin had stressed in his search.

A three year starter at University of Nevada Las Vegas, Theus is considered one of the best players in Runnin’ Rebel history. Leading the Rebels to the Final Four in his sophomore year, UNLV lost in the semifinals to the University of North Carolina. Drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1978 with the ninth pick in the draft, Theus had a career spanning 13 years in the NBA.

After playing abroad for two years, Theus was hired as the head coach of New Mexico State in 2005 and within two years turned a below .500 team into the Western Athletic Conference champions and NCAA Tournament bound team. With his success at UNM, the Maloof brothers brought Theus on to coach the Sacramento Kings, whom he once played for, with a three year contract in 2007.

Replaced by assistant coach Kenny Natt after a 6-18 start in 2008, Theus served on the Minnesota Timberwolves staff as an assistant coach from 2009-2011.
