The Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team opens its 2007 conference schedule on the road this weekend against the Aggies of UC Davis and the Tigers of the University of the Pacific. The pair of games this weekend will culminate the Matador’s current four-game road trip, as they look forward to a fresh start in Big West conference play this season.
The Matador’s lost their last two games on the road, getting shutout by the University of San Diego 1-0 and also falling to Pepperdine University 3-1, to end their non-conference schedule for the 2007 season. The lone goal scored on the current road trip was put into the net by sophomore forward Poirsha Woolfork, the first of goal of her career at Cal State Northridge. Freshman forward Salma Tarik, who picked up her second assist of the season on Woolfork’s goal, leads the Matadors with six total points. Sophomore goalkeeper Kellie Drenner has recorded 27 total saves while posting a .628 save percentage on the season.
The Matadors have played UC Davis a total of four times, splitting the all-time series at two games each. The last time these two teams met, the Matador’s prevailed with a double-overtime victory. As a first-year member of the Big West Conference, the Aggies were shut out by Cal State Fullerton, 2-0, in their first conference game on Sept. 23. They lost 4-1 to the University of Nevada in their last game on Sept. 28, a non-conference game. The Aggies have defeated Kent State, Fresno State, University of San Francisco and Sacramento State in their four victories this season. Senior forward Dayna Dumont leads the Aggies in both goals scored (5), and total points (11).
Pacific trails Northridge in the all-time series between the two teams 4-3-1, with the Matador’s pulling out a double-overtime victory the last time they met. The Tigers lost 2-1 to the 22nd ranked University of San Diego on Sept. 30, their last time out on the field. They’ve beaten Mount St. Mary’s, Kent State, Tennessee-Martin, Valparaiso and Cal State Bakersfield in their five wins this season. With a total of five goals and 11 points so far this season, senior forward Bunny Dickson leads her team in both categories. Freshman forward Sammi Teramae leads the Tigers in assist, with a total of five on the season, and is second on the squad with nine total points.
The Matador’s game against the Aggies will be played at UC Davis on Friday at 4 p.m. Their match with the Tigers will be played at Pacific in Stockton on Sunday at noon.
