The CSUN women’s volleyball team won its second straight match Tuesday night, beating the Cal State Fullerton Titans 26-30, 30-24, 34-36, 30-25, 20-18 and 3-2.

The five-game match was just short of three hours long and featured 46 lead changes and 18 tie scores.

“The thrill of the pursuit of victory was there,” said head coach Jeff Stork. “The fans that were there certainly got their money’s worth.”

Freshman outside hitter Brittany Williams set a new career high with 24 kills while hitting .214. Williams, who also had five blocks in the match, has been the team leader in kills for the last three matches.

Freshman outside hitter Alex Johnson also had a good night, posting a double-double, by knocking down 20 kills while hitting .306 for the match and digging up 17 balls.

Stork said Williams and Johnson took a lot of swings, combining for 44 kills, more than half of the team’s 83 total kills for the match.

“The two freshman have done a terrific job for us,” Stork said.

The two other Matadors with double-digit kills were redshirt freshman middle blocker Lynda Morales with 13 kills and junior outside hitter Jenn Probert with 12. Morales also had 12 blocks, while Probert added five.

As a team, the Matadors hit .226, which Stork said is a pretty high percentage. He said the team’s hitting is also a credit to team’s setting abilities.

“Some good things are happening for the team,” Stork said. “I hope this is a sign of things to come.”

Junior setter Kayla Wright set a new career-high with 63 assists for the night. Wright also had 18 digs. Amy Hultner had a team-high 31 digs and junior libero Kelly Hanson added 14 digs.

For the Titans, junior outside hitter Jennifer Francisco set a new career record with her match-high 28 kills while hitting .324. Sophomore outside hitter Devon Bukoski had 17 kills and freshman middle blocker Erin Saddler had 12 kills. Senior setter Julie Gessert had 60 assists, eight digs and seven blocks. Freshman libero Cami Croteau had a team-high 27 digs. Bukoski had 17 and Francisco had 14. Freshman middle blocker Alex Wolnisty had 12 blocks, including solo blocks. As a team, Fullerton hit .195 with 72 kills. The Titans out-blocked the Matadors, with 20 team blocks compared to 14 by CSUN.

“Fullerton’s a tough team,” Stork said. “They played well. We played well.” The Matadors are back on the road next three games, starting with Saturday’s match against Long Beach State at 7 p.m.
