Throughout the month of October, some of the student athletes and coaches were given Big West Conference awards and players of the week for their hard work in the sports they play.
The 2016 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year was awarded to women’s soccer goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill. She not only broke a school record for shutouts, but also a Big West Conference record for 14 shutouts in a single season. Earlier in the month she also received Big West Player of the Week for her defensive play in the net.
Women’s soccer defender Nicole Thompson was given Defensive Player of the Year from the Big West Conference. She led the women’s soccer team in the defensive line while tying the Big West Conference women’s soccer for a single season record. Earlier in the month, Thompson received Big West Player of the Week for her first career goal and setting a new record for our women’s soccer program for shutouts.
The 2016 All-Big West first and second teams had many of the women’s soccer players names announced. The first team two-time nominated midfielder Taylor Hobson, Thompson and McCaskill.
While second team had forward Cynthia Sanchez, midfielder Kourtney Kutscher, midfielder Camille Watson and defender Lindsay Kutscher.
Women’s soccer head coach Keith West was also given the Big West Coach of the Year.
Men’s soccer goalkeeper Kevin Marquez was honored with a Big West Player of the Week for his third clean sheet this week and took away Big West Goalkeeper of the Year. Marquez helped the team clinch a spot in the Big West tournament with his defensive opportunities in the net. While defender Patrick Hickman was given Defensive Player of the Year for his help in front of the net.
Men’s soccer team head coach Terry Davila received the Big West Coach of the Year. This is his sixth time being Coach of the Year which puts him second all-time within the Big West Conference.
The 2016 All-Big West first team for men’s soccer had three Matadors included. Midfielder Juan Fernando Samayoa, Hickman and Marquez.
Women’s volleyball Katie Soto got Big West Player of the week for help in a comeback win. This is her second time this season receiving Big West Player of the Week for her dig average and assists.
