Thursday night the CSUN women’s soccer team fell to Long Beach State, 1-0, in the opening round of the Big West Conference Tournament.

The match began with the Matadors coming close to scoring on two occasions: a corner kick by forward Kourtney Kutscher, and a shot by senior Camille Watson that was saved by Long Beach State goalie Ashton McKeown.

The 49ers countered the Matadors with a shot by junior forward Tori Bolden but was saved by goalie Jovani McCaskill, one of her 12 of the match.

During the first half Long Beach State had eight shots while CSUN only had three shots.

The scoreboard opened in the 13th minute when LBSU forward Ashley Gonzales scored her 10th goal of the season with an assist from junior Jessica Vincent.

Despite being ahead in the scoreboard, LBSU continued attacking the Matadors with header shots and corner kicks.

In the first half the Matadors committed six fouls while Long Beach had committed only three.

The second half began with a yellow card on Alvarez in the 47th minute of the match.

Despite a scoreless second half both teams had opportunities to score. Long Beach came close to scoring 10 times but failed to so every time. They also had nine corner kicks that gave them an opportunity to score but they were not able to.

The Matadors came close to scoring on three occasions but couldn’t execute. A shot by midfielder Taylor Hobson was too high. In the 88th minute they had a final opportunity to score but a shot by senior Camille Watson went wide.

After this loss the Matadors are out of the Big West Tournament.

Long Beach State will play on Sunday against the winner of UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton for the opportunity to claim the conference’s automatic bid into the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
