Gillenwater takes second at Aztec Fall Classic

Junior Krystina Gillenwater shot a one-over par two round score of 145 to take second place individually in the Aztec Fall Classic at Salt Creek Golf Course in San Diego.

Head coach Bonnie Murphy said she knew Gillenwater was capable of putting up these scores.

“I wasn’t surprised. It was a long time coming,” Murphy said. “She played great and she played solid.”

Gillenwater tied for the best round of the day on Tuesday with a score of one-under par 71. Her performance helped to boost the CSUN women’s golf team into a fifth place tie with Middle Tennessee State. The Matadors finished 37-over par, scoring 306 for the first round and 307 for the second, for a total score of 613 for 19-over par.

UC Irvine won the team tournament with a final score of 17-over par, 593 (297, 296). Patty Chawalitmetha of UC Irvine won the individual title by carding a two-under par 142 (70, 72).

The next best Matador finish was junior Stephanie Aston, who tied for 31st with a final score of 10-over par, 154 (80, 74) for the tournament. Senior Eva Yoe finished tied for 33rd place at 11-over par, 155 (74, 81), senior Lucy Davies took 54th with a final score of 15-over 159 (78, 81) and sophomore Monique Huijsman shot 173 (86, 87) to finish 29-over par and in 99th place.

Matadors competing individually included freshman Aslee Nagamine, who finished tied for 60th place with a final score of 17-over par, 161 (82, 79), junior Katrina Sutton tied for 84th at 23-over and 167 (88, 79) and sophomore Julie Cho tied for 90th with a final score of 24- over par, 168 (88, 80).

CSUN heads out to Hawaii on Oct. 30 and 31 for the Kent Youel Invitational in Waikiki.
