Nicolson wins at GADO tourney in Mexico

Cal State Northridge senior Kyle Nicolson posted rounds of 69-71-67 on the Flamingos G.C. course in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to win the GADO North Texas Classic individual title by two shots. ?As a team, the Matadors finished in second place out of a 14-team field.

The victory was Nicholson’s first individual title and CSUN’s second individual title of the season. Freshman Nick Delio became the first Matador in more than seven years to win a tournament when he won the SCU Invitational at Silver Creek Valley CC in San Jose in October. ?

“For the team it’s great,” said coach Jim Bracken. “It’s our second individual title this season, so it shows that we have a lot of depth and the guys to do it.”

After entering the final round tied for first with Jose Toledo (-7, 209) of New Orleans, Nicholson?(-9, 207) fired a final round 5-under-par 67 to defeat Toledo by two strokes. ?Nicholson’s best finish prior to this victory was 15th place at the Shootout at Angel Park in September.

The Matadors second place finish also tied their best finish of the season. ?The team finished in second place at the Shootout at Angel Park. ?

Louisiana-Lafayette won the team championship in Puerto Vallarta by 22 strokes. They took a 13-shot lead into the final round Monday, and after carding a final round 282, they extended their already massive lead to 22 strokes on their road to victory.

The Matadors’ Delio finished tied for 23rd with teammate, junior Clint Oleson, at +6, 222. ?Also for the Matadors, junior Chris Satterlee finished in a tie for 28th-place at +7, 223 and junior Erik Jarvey finished in a tie for 35th at +8, 224. Although he was very pleased with the team’s second place finish, Bracken feels the team has played too erratically all season.

“Hopefully we’ll move forward from here,” Bracken said. “We’ve been inconsistent all season. The next tournament will be a good indication for where we’re at.”

The Matadors next tournament will be played Mar. 3-4 at the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC Riverside.
