Three members of CSUN confirmed with COVID-19

Covid logoThree CSUN community members have been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to an email sent to the campus by Dr. Yolanda Reid, director of the Klotz Student Health Center and Gregory Murphy, chief of CSUN Police Department on Wednesday.

Two cases were confirmed by medical professionals, and one reported diagnosis to CSUN. The email states that all three are receiving medical care.

According to the email, the cases involve an employee who had been on campus in the past week and two students who have not been on campus as recently, but are residing in a neighboring county.

According to Marisol Garcia, RN Lead of Public Health at the Klotz Student Health Center, the last time the students were on campus was on March 13. Due to patient confidentiality, it is unknown if the CSUN members were faculty or staff. 

Garcia confirmed that the students are not currently in Los Angeles County.

“We are working closely with the health department so that if anyone tested positive, we are tracking and performing surveillance for anyone that they may have contacted in the last week,” Garcia said. 

Anyone identified as having had close contact with these individuals have been or will be notified immediately, according to the email and Garcia.

“We have contacted those people and recommend self-isolation,” Garcia said.

Garcia said the health center handles each case differently depending on the individual. 

If the individual is at home and isn’t able to reduce a fever with medication, they will determine what the next best course of action should be. 

The health center will have their lines open for questions.

Under the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines, the Klotz Center does not test asymptomatic individuals for COVID-19.

If an individual associated with CSUN has symptoms including a fever, cough and shortness of breath, contact the health center at 818-677-3666. The individual will then be referred for testing accordingly.

The email states that facilities that have been visited by the employee have been closed and will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

“Across Southern California and at CSUN, we are moving into a phase where there will be more cases of COVID-19, which underscores the measures CSUN has already implemented to increase physical space of six feet or more for our campus community,” the email states. “This social distancing, combined with thorough hand-washing, cleaning surfaces and other hygiene measures, will help us reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

CSUN has posted updates and information on COVID-19 on their website. California’s ongoing state actions combating COVID-19 are posted to ca.gov.

The Department of Public Health is cooperating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to respond to recent reports of the coronavirus.
