The Associated Students (A.S.) Senate approved two key director positions for Student Production and Campus Entertainment (S.P.A.C.E.) Tuesday, while one S.P.A.C.E. director nominee’s approval was postponed indefinitely.
It wasn’t clear if Ian Umali, the S.P.A.C.E. director of finance nominee, was eligible to take the post, said A.S. Vice President Conor Lansdale.
No comment was made on the details of what requirement(s) postponed Umali’s approval.
Every director needs to meet a 2.0 grade point average requirement and have the time to attend his or her designated meetings.
Umali is the brother of former A.S. Vice President Nicole Umali.
Alejandra Garcia, the newly appointed S.P.A.C.E. executive director, will take over for Audrey Younna after two years at the position.
“She has been my right hand person while I have been director,” Younna said about Garcia.
Garcia was Director of Concerts this semester and has been involved with S.P.A.C.E. since her freshman year. Garcia was the stage manager at this fall’s Big Show.
Younna was executive director for the last three Big Show’s and was involved in incurring one of the largest debts for S.P.A.C.E. from the Big Show that headlined Ludacris.
Angelita Garcia, no relation to Alejandra Garcia, was approved to S.P.A.C.E.’s director of concerts position. Angelita has been active with S.P.A.C.E. since January and she worked as Alejandra Garcia assistant for this fall’s Big Show.
Interviews for the remaining S.P.A.C.E. positions will take place on Dec. 2 and 3.
The director appointments will take effect Jan. 4.
S.P.A.C.E. organized the Oct. 3 Big Show that featured artist Lupe Fiasco. Previous Big Shows included artists Ludacris and Ne-Yo.
The A.S. Senate will pass out postcards for students, faculty, community members and parents to fill out in opposition to proposed Cal State student fee increases for students.
The A.S. president and senators will take the postcards to the monthly California State Student Association (CSSA) meeting on Dec. 11-14 and pass them out on the Dec. 14 at the State Capital in Sacramento.
The postcard references a study done by the California State University (CSU) that states the CSU saves the state money more than what was invested by the state.
Dec. 9 will be the tentative date that the postcards need to be collected. Less than eight A.S. affiliated members will attend the CSSA conference. A.S. members will work with other CSSA member campuses to lobby on Dec. 14.
An indefinite number of booths will be set up on campus where postcards will be handed out. Specific dates and times will be finalized by Friday, Lansdale said.
E-mails will be sent to clubs and organizations for anyone that wants to hand out postcards, Lansdale said.
A section of the postcard allows people to write in comments.
Postcards that are not filled out will be sent to the Chancellors Office in Long Beach.
