Athletics Director Shawn Chin-Farrell announced that Aquiles Montoya will be named the head coach of the women’s volleyball team.
The decision comes after former head coach John Price retired following the 2023 season in which the Matadors finished 6-23 overall and 4-14 in conference play. After the announcement, Montoya will be named the ninth head coach in the program’s history.
Aquiles Montoya spent the previous four seasons at Portland State as associate head coach and the director of recruiting. Under the coaching staff, the Vikings made postseason appearances in 2021 and 2022 in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). The Vikings secured their first national postseason tournament win in Division I program history in the first round in 2021.
In a press release put out by the athletic department, Montoya expressed his excitement in joining the program.
“My family and I are ecstatic to join the CSUN Matador family,” Montoya said. “I want to thank Shawn Chin-Farrell and Sonia Hahn for the opportunity to represent this amazing university and Athletics Department. It was apparent that through this process they are leading a department where the backbone is a family atmosphere that provides the best experience possible for student-athletes.”
Hahn was just promoted to CSUN’s Deputy Director of Athletics, in another big move for the athletic department.
