Letter to the editor: Dec. 9, 2009

Hello editor-

Thank you for your November 9th staff editorial concerning disabled placard violations.
The Department of Police Services takes very seriously the misuse of disabled parking placards and therefore continues to aggressively pursue this violation and when possible partner with other agencies to provide strict enforcement of these laws. I wanted to provide you with some statistics that would shed some light on what the Department of Police Services has, and continues to do, to enforce such violations. Over the past three years, 780 citations have been issued, 112 of those specifically for fraudulent use of a placard.
In March 2007, we partnered with DMV investigators on a disabled placard task force which resulted in catching 24 offenders misusing the placard. This effort was strictly to catch offenders as CSUN has a history of disabled placard abuse. Since that time, we have worked aggressively to enforce the law for those that take advantage of using the placard to their benefit and remind the community that this is a serious offense that will not be tolerated. Below I’ve included a breakdown of citations issued since 2007:

Number of citations issued for 4461 (c) CVC-
fraudulently displaying a disabled placard.
• 2007- 31 citations issued
• 2008- 51 citations issued
• 2009- (as of Nov. 9, 2009) 30 citations issued

Parking-related citations, such as failure to properly
display an ADA placard, are as follows:
• 2007- 180 citations
• 2008- 321 citations
• 2009- 167 citations (as of Nov. 9, 2009)

If you would like to discuss any of this further, please contact me, I’d be happy to meet with you and/or your reporters.

Sincerely,
Christina Villalobos
