An early two-goal lead wasn’t enough to hand the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team its second win of the season as they opened the Boilermaker Challenge with a 2-2 draw against host Purdue on Friday night.
After two scoreless overtime periods, both teams engaged in a shootout, which the Matadors won 3-2 to advance to Sunday’s championship match against Dayton. Even though CSUN won the shootout, both teams will be credited with a tie on their records.
The Matadors (1-4-1) got off to a fast start, scoring in the second minute of the game. Senior forward Heidi Farran, who scored two goals in the victory over Princeton on Sunday, continued her stellar play as she shot a floater from the right side of the field, 15 yards out, into the top left corner of the net to give CSUN the early 1-0 lead.
Purdue (2-4-1) tried to even the score with three shots on goal in a row. Two of the shots were saved by junior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo and the other shot was blocked by a CSUN defender.
Farran almost netted her second goal of the game in the 26th minute on a shot that went wide left of the goal.
In the 30th minute, sophomore defender Chloe McDaniel extended the Matador’s lead with a header into the right side of the net off a pass from senior midfielder Alexis Barbara. This was the first goal of the season for McDaniel and the first assist of the season for Barbara.
In the 52nd minute, the Boilermakers cut into CSUN’s lead after a goal by freshman midfielder Chinyelu Asher. Asher put back her own rebound into the bottom left corner of the net.
Purdue tied the score, 2-2, in the 70th minute on a corner kick goal. Sophomore defender Jordan Frick bent in a corner kick inside the far post.
CSUN had two opportunities to take back the lead late in the game, but could not finish.
Purdue had the first shot in the shootout, but senior midfielder Kellie Phillips missed her shot.
It was then CSUN’s turn. Sophomore defender Shannon Ward put the Matadors ahead with her penalty kick goal. Purdue missed its second shot, giving CSUN a chance to take a 2-0 advantage. The Matadors blew the opportunity to extend their lead when freshman midfielder Hannah Wissler missed.
Both teams made their next two shots to bring the score to 3-2. The Boilermakers missed the penalty kick that would have tied the score.
