The CSUN women’s soccer team played their second home game this season taking on the San Jose State Spartans. For the Matadors, they started this game with a record of 1-4 with their only game being won at home.

The Spartans looked to get their first win of the season this year (0-3-1 record), they have only won five games in the past four years. This streak will continue for the Spartans as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

In the first half, it was a back-and-forth ball game; both teams had 50% ball possession total, adding to the balance the first half had shown. Within the final 15 minutes of the first half, momentum had gone full circle for the Matadors, having constant pressure offensively through headers and multiple crosses.

A major spotlight for both teams in the first half were the goalkeepers, Matador goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin had three major saves including one with 29 minutes left to go in the half, saving a ball near the right crossbar. Spartan goalkeeper Paige Fry also had three saves leading to a 0-0 game going into the second half.

In the first 11 minutes of the second half, Fry had a fantastic save for the Spartans to keep the game even. In the middle of the second half, it was all matadors in terms of possession as CSUN had consistent corner kicks and became threatening to the Spartan defense.

Unfortunately for the Matadors, this was not enough to get the victory. The Matadors finished the game with 13 total shots and 12 corner kicks with eight of them coming in the second half.

Mauldin ended the game with four saves for the Matadors and credited her team’s defense.

“Us as a defensive line, we stayed really compact, really locked in and I was super proud of the whole team as a whole,” Mauldin said. “A super big game for us to not concede at home.”

The Matadors held the Spartans to just nine shots the entire game and only three corners.

Although the matadors had tied the game, head coach for the Matadors Gina Brewer was still satisfied with the result.

“You know we’re happy that we didn’t concede any goals… we obviously wanted to score that goal and we weren’t able to put it in the back of the net but we created a lot of opportunities which we were excited about,” Brewer said. “Moving forward we just have to be a little more clinical and have better technical execution in those moments.”

The Matadors have a short week, as they face the UNLV Rebels on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
