W-Soccer: CSUN earns a draw in Big West opener

Heidi Farran’s game-tying goal in the 82nd minute salvaged a 1-1 tie for the CSUN women’s soccer team against Pacific in its Big West Conference opener on Friday night

Farran scored her fourth goal of the season after Brielle Slepicoff passed her the ball inside the penalty box as the senior forward placed the ball in the top right corner of the net.

Pacific (6-4-1, 0-0-1) jumped on the visiting Matadors (2-6-2, 0-0-1) early, only needing two opportunities to score its lone goal of the game.  In the 26th minute, senior midfielder Alex Topp headed in her first goal of the season to make the score 1-0.

The Matadors had solid opportunities to score in the first half.  Junior defender Stephanie Norton had a shot that went wide right and sophomore defender Shannon Ward missed on a corner kick. CSUN had three corner kicks in the first 24 minutes of the game.

CSUN’s best chance to tie the score came in the 38th minute when Slepicoff’s shot hit off the crossbar.

For the second game in a row, the Matadors went into overtime.  In the 102nd minute, junior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo made a game-saving save on a shot by Topp.

The Matadors and the Tigers both had 14 shots.  Alexis Barbara and Slepicoff led the Matadors with three shots apiece and Slepicoff also added an assist.  Jacobo had seven saves to bring her season total to 29.

The Matadors play their second conference game on Sunday at UC Davis.
