The Matadors finished up the weekend series at Sacramento State with a 5-3 win behind a Miles Williams three-run homerun in the second inning.
Williams smacked a first-pitch fastball over the right field fence scoring teammates Todd Eskilin and Marty Bowen to put CSUN (2-1) ahead of the Hornets, 3-1.
Junior Jacob Peterson earned the win for CSUN after allowing eight hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Freshmen Brandon Warner and Jacob Leyba combined to finish off the victory allowing a single hit in 3 1/3 innings. Leyba earned the save, his first of the year.
Williams led all Matadors with three hits and three runs batted in while the rest of the CSUN offense combined to put together five hits on the day.
The Matadors spotted the Hornets (1-2) a first-inning run, but took the lead right back with the Williams homer in the second.
After giving up another run in the bottom of the second, CSUN added to its lead in the fourth when Eskilin scored on a double play after being walked to lead off the inning.
Freshman Alexis Mercado saw his first playing time behind the plate and threw out two base runners, but failed to get his first hit on the offensive side.
