Associated Students inducted 15 new senators and three members of its executive cabinet during its spring semester inauguration ceremony Feb. 7.

Safa Sajadi, A.S. vice president, said this was the first semester since she began serving in A.S. that both graduate representatives seats have been filled. Sajadi gave out awards to returning and retired members for various achievements during service.

“I’m really excited about the new blood coming into A.S,” Sajadi said. “It’s an era of rejuvenation.”

Nadia Souri, College of Science and Mathematics II, said she was excited about her new seat and eager to begin her term.

Souri said she plans to simplify the advisement process in her college by improving the coordination between the different advisement offices. She said she also hopes to update the computers in the Physics Department and acquire a new study room for biology students.

Souri said she would be meeting with students and faculty in the college to discuss further ideas and hear suggestions from her constituents.

Chad Charton, A.S. president, said he was happy with the turnout of students willing to serve as student representatives this semester.

“The vacancies on our board and standing committees are dwindling,” he said.

“By design our organization is structured in such a way that we have student representatives to account for every segment of our student population,” Charton said.

There are still many vacancies in the standing committees despite the new inductees, he said.

“One that is always very critical (to A.S.) is our finance committee,” Charton stated.

The finance committee, which is comprised of eight representatives from the eight colleges as well as other members, has an open position.

Maria Bratly, a graduate representative, said she is looking for graduating seniors to serve on her senior committee.

Bratly said recruiting graduating students was difficult because of busy school and work schedules, adding that it is not too late to get involved.

William Waltkins, assistant vice president for student affairs, swore in the new senators at the ceremony, including: Corrita Martin, upper division II, Rohit Sharma, upper division IV, William Martinez, lower division IV, Jenna Humphrey, College of Arts, Media and Communication I, and James Stephens, College of Health and Human Development II.

Other senators inducted include Nadia Souri, College of Science and Math II, Leonard Wong, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences II, Maria Bratly, graduate I, and Robby LaPlante, graduate II.

Returning senators for the board include Rachel Bentley, Johny Tadros, Asusena Castaneda, Juana Zamora and Selene Salas.

Newly appointed members of the Executive Cabinet were also inducted at the ceremony. Adam Salgado, attorney general, Ali Sanati, director of personnel, and Jennifer Santos, executive director of Student Productions and Campus Entertainment, were appointed during the inauguration.
