Water Polo ends three-game losing streak with two wins

After losing three straight matches, including the match against ninth-ranked San Diego State at home on Feb. 24, the number 19 Cal State Northridge women’s water polo team won two straight matches at the Redlands Tournament on Feb. 25.

In the loss against the Aztecs, senior utility Erica Bonetti scored three goals, while sophomore 2 meter Allison Brookes added two.

San Diego State tied the game at one, 14 seconds into the second period. The Matadors and the Aztecs exchanged goals for the remainder of the quarter, including a goal by Bonetti which gave CSUN the halftime lead.

But the lead would not hold, SDSU rallied in the third quarter, scoring four goals. Bonetti scored the Matadors’ only goal in the period at the 3:27 mark.

In the fourth quarter, the Aztecs took over the game by scoring four goals that sealed the San Diego State 11-5 victory. Nine different Aztec players scored a goal in the match, including two goals each by freshman 2 meter Ashling Taylor and junior utility Elana Cervantes.

“Terrible,” said head coach Molly Barnes. “We did not perform at all. There wasn’t any leadership out there and we just fell apart.”

The Matadors’ record fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in MPSF play, while SDSU improved to 4-2 and 1-1 in conference play.

After three matches at home, the Matadors hit the road and competed in the University of Redlands Tournament, where they defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripts, 11-3 and Cal State San Bernardino, 14-6. Senior 2 meter Heather van Hermet scored seven goals in the matches on Feb. 24.

In the first match of the tournament, van Hermet netted the first goal of the game at the 4:46 mark. Freshman driver Jessica Coy put in two goals at the 3:19 mark and with 14 seconds remaining in the quarter, while sophomore 2 meter Christine Cruz scored an additional goal at 4:15 to give CSUN a 4-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Brookes scored both Matador goals. CSUN held CMS to one goal in the period, which was scored by Annie Richardson with 1:28 left in the quarter. The Matadors ended the half with a 6-1 lead.

Cruz scored the only goal for the Matadors in the third quarter, while Richardson scored her second of the game for the Athenas.

In the final period, Brookes put in her third goal of the game at the 5:40 mark. Senior driver Ashley Hunhoff scored her first goal of the match with 5:03 remaining in the quarter.

Freshman driver Devin Sloan scored her first collegiate goal at the 3:15 mark in the fourth quarter, and van Hemert scored her second goal of the game with 1:47 remaining in the game, as the Matadors took a 11-3 victory.

At goal for CSUN, junior goalie Katy Erhardt posted eight saves in the win.

In the Matadors’ second match of the day, freshman utility Erica Waltemade scored her first goal of the season just 50 seconds into the game.

Junior driver Jennifer Macdonnell, Coy and Brookes each added a goal as the Matadors ended the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.

Junior driver Lynzy Klein and van Hermet added two goals in the second quarter along with one from Cruz. CSUN held CSUSB to one goal in the period to take a 9-2 lead at the half.

The Matadors were held to one goal in the third quarter, while CSUSB scored three goals to bring the score to 10-5.

CSUN responded in the fourth, scoring four more goals, and allowed only one more goal to be scored by CSUSB to win 14-6.

Six different Matadors each scored a goal in the match, while Erhardt had 16 saves in the game.

CSUN’s next match will be at USC March 3 at 5 p.m.
