Personal records set for track and field

On April 28-29, the Cal State Northirdge men and women’s track teams participated in the Steve Scott Invitational located in the UC Irvine Stadium. It was the Matadors’ final chance to tune up their performances before the Big West Championship, which will begin May 6.

There were three athletes that posted an NCAA Provisional mark at the invitational, and coaches felt that the team did well overall. The athletes were Deanna Goodwin, Anthony Brown and Rolando Felizola.

Goodwin ran a career-best time of 23.92 in the 200 meters. She finished in fourth, and it was in this event that she posted an NCAA Provisional mark.

Brown, who took first in the 100 meters, beat his personal-best from the USC Invitational by 0.02 seconds with a time of 10.54 at the Steve Scott Invitational.

“It always feels good to (beat a personal record), as long as I did my best,” Brown said.

Also in the 100m, Ron Weatherspoon finished with a career best time of 10.96 seconds.

The third NCAA Provisional post come from Felizola, who jumped a career best in the triple jump with a mark of 50-8.25 (15.45m).

“(Beating my personal record) has been a long time coming,” he said, “I’ve been trying to beat it since my junior year of high school. It’s just nice to finally get it.”

Awet Hagos followed behind in second with a career-best mark of 49-2.25 (14.99m).

Sean Jones posted another season-best in the pole vault. Jones had a height of 17-0.75 (5.20m) to take second place. Brandon Ruffin also posted a career best in the long jump with a mark of 22-7.75 (6.90m).

Shauna Hackett beat her season best with a time of 24.27 in the 200m. In the 400, Candyce Babb pushed herself to take a season best with a time of 58.97 seconds.

In the 100 meter hurdles, Ashleigh McGrew took fourth place with a time of 14.10 seconds.

Julie Eze had a time of 15.10 and La’Shana Verdon had a time of 15.19. Both athletes ran a season best. Verdon finished 5th in the high jump (5-3), as well as third in the long jump (19-2).

“I think I did okay,” Verdon said. “I figured out what I needed to do to get a better mark in the long jump.”

The women’s 4x100m relay team finished in first at 45.83 seconds. The men’s team also finished in first with a time of 41.06, as well as third in the 4x400m with a time of 3:20.50.

According to coach Avery Anderson, the team need to improve on the hand-offs between the different players. Anderson, however, refused to comment on if he was referring to the men’s or women’s 4x100m relay team.

Brown said he felt that the order of the runners was designated on more of a speed-based merit, rather than a hand off.

“I was the anchor, but they moved me to first leg so we could get a better start because the first two legs aren’t as strong,” Brown said. We wanted the head start.”

Back in field events, Bobbie Patton finished second in the shot put with a throw of 44-9, as well as second in the javelin with a mark of 137-9. Tatiana Crochet also posted a fifth place which was her season best, with a mark of 176-10 in the hammer.

On the men’s side, Cody Pearce had a season best in the hammer throw. Pearce had a mark of 173-3. Alex Butler also had a season best with his mark of 171-0.

“We did good, we have some things to improve,” Anderson said. “But we’re where we should be… We’re going to be fine.”
