The Cal State Northridge women’s track team won its third Big West Outdoor Title in the last five years while the men finished fourth, ending their run of two-straight outdoor titles May 12-13 at the Matador Track Complex.

In the women’s hammer, the Matadors won first, second and third. First place went to Raquel Sola with a throw of 189 feet even.

“I feel I can do better,” Sola said. But I’m so happy that I could get points for my university.”

Second place went to Tatiana Crochet.

“It’s not so much how I placed,” Crochet said. “This season has been really hard in terms of getting a (personal record).”

Crochet had a throw of 182.6 feet while Jessica Beach took third with a throw of 173.6 feet.

The Matadors took first through fifth in the women’s long jump. All jumps reached at least 19 feet. Candyce Babb had a personal record in first with a jump of 20.2 feet.

“I’ve never felt better,” Babb said. “This is the happiest track day of my life.”

Brittany Ricketts also finished with a personal best jump in second with a mark of 19 feet 8.25 inches.

Dominique Calvin took third with a jump of 19 feet 5.5 inches, while La’Shana Verdon had a jump of 19 feet 4.75 inches. Kayli Sanders finished the event up in fifth with a mark of 19 feet.

In the men’s long jump, Rolando Felizola fouled out after three attempts while Bobbie Patton finished in fourth in the javelin with a throw of 38.08 meters.

For the men’s long jump, Jonathan Moore finished in fourth place with a mark of 6.75 meters. Moore was followed by Brandon Ruffin, who had a mark of 6.66 meters.

For the final field event on the first day, Ricketts finished in fifth place with a high jump of 1.65 meters.

Jere Summers took third place with a throw of 45.74 meters. In the women’s triple, La’Shana Verdon finished sixth with a jump of 11.98 meters.

The women’s 4×100 meter relay team took first place, with a finish of 45.90 seconds. The team consisted of Calvin, Deanna Goodwin, Shauna Hacket and Briana Lynn.

Though the men’s 4×100 meter team took first, they were not pleased with their performance.

“We qualified for regionals, but we wanted to break the school record,” said Anthony Brown.

In the men’s high jump, Alex Marbley took fourth with a jump of 2.10 meters. Justin Johnson took eighth place with a jump of 2.00 meters.

On the field, Jere Summers and Bobbie Patton went first and second in the women’s shot put. Summers had a mark of 15.23 meters and Patton finished with a 14.71 meter.

Brown finished first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.50 seconds. Fourteen seconds away was Ruffin in fifth place. Ike finished in seventh in seventh with a time of 10.69 seconds.

In the women’s 100 meter dash, the Matadors went first and second with Deanna Goodwin in first place with 11.83 seconds and Hackett with 11.98 seconds.

Ashleigh McGrew took second in the 100 meter hurdle with a time of 13.90 seconds. Rickets came in fourth place at 14.55 seconds, while Sanders came in seventh with a time of 13.90 seconds.

In the men’s 400 meter dash, Savoy finished in third with a time of 47.42 seconds.

Brown and Johnson went one and two in the men’s 100 meter hurdles. Brown had a time of 14.13 seconds while Johnson finished with a time of 14.15 seconds. James Fredrickson came in seventh with a time of 15.31.

Verdon took first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 62.11 seconds. She also took second in the heat.

In the women’s 200 meter dash, Godwin took second place. She finished with a time of 23.96 seconds. Fourth place went to Hackett with a time of 24.48 seconds.

Back in the field, Felizola took second in the triple jump with a mark of 15.27 meters.

Johnson took second in the 400 meter hurdles at 52.07 seconds. He competed in 14 events throughout the conference events.

In the men’s 200 meter dash, Savoy finished fourth with a final time of 21.86 seconds.

Sean Jones took second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.90 meters.

“Today wasn’t too strong,” Jones said. “I was ok, but I didn’t put it all together.”

In the women’s 4×4 team finished in third place with a time of 3:13.65 seconds.

“They’ll (the men’s team) held their heads up high and just do their best to win it next year,” head coach Don Strametz said.

As for the women, “It’s what they have been training for all year,” said coach Dale Calper. “They’ve really showed what they were made of.”

Regionals will be held in Provo, Utah May 26-27.
