CSUN, winner of 15 of last 18, goes undefeated in San Diego Classic II

The Cal State Northridge softball team went a perfect 5-0 at the San Diego Classic II last weekend. The Matadors looked impressive against some tough competition and were the only team to go undefeated in the tournament. CSUN is red hot, going 15-3 over its last 18 games. The main reason for the Matadors success of late is the pitching of their ace, Debbie Duran. For the season, Duran has a record of 13-5 with an ERA of 1.55. Duran also went 5-0 in San Diego with an 0.93 ERA and a .160 batting average for the opposition.’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘

Friday vs. Texas Tech
Won 3-2

The Matadors opened the San Diego Classic II Friday morning with a 3-2 victory in eight innings over Texas Tech. The game was a pitching duel between CSUN’s Duran and the Red Raiders’ Ashly Jacobs. Duran pitched a complete game and recorded five strike outs. Jacobs also went the distance, pitching eight innings and striking out seven Matadors. CSUN’s Alexandria Alvarado opened the eighth inning with a single. Later in the inning, Micah Putman hit a double to score in Alvarado, giving the Matadors the 3-2 win.

Friday vs. Oklahoma State
Won 3-1

CSUN defeated Oklahoma State 4-3 on Friday afternoon. The Matadors had a solid game at the plate and got 11 hits. Jaclyn Rymer had three of those and scored two runs. In the bottom of the second inning, Alvarado hit a single that scored Rymer and Krystal Raphael, which gave CSUN a 3-1 lead. In the top of the third, Oklahoma State tied the game at 3-3 and that’s when Duran came in to relief. Duran pitched 4.2 innings of hitless softball. CSUN got the win in the bottom of the seventh inning after Jaci Carlsen hit a fly ball that was dropped by an Oklahoma State left fielder. Alvarado took advantage and scored the winning run.

Saturday vs. Miami (OH)
Won 5-1

The Matadors got a 5-1 victory against Miami (OH) on Saturday afternoon. Once again, Duran dominated by pitching a complete game and only allowing five Redhawk hits. The Matador bats also did their part by getting 11 hits. Alvarado, Putman, Rymer, Lauren Olivias and Christina Saenz all had RBIs. CSUN did most of its damage in second inning, scoring four runs.

Saturday vs. Iowa State
Won 2-0

CSUN defeated Iowa State 2-0 on Saturday night. The Matadors used the combination of Amanda Pitzenberger and Duran to lead them to victory. Pitzenberger started the game and pitched 3.2 innings. Duran came in for relief work and didn’t allow a hit in 3.1 innings. CSUN scored their runs in the second inning. Karla Chaparro had the only RBI of the game after hitting a single to score Olivas.’ ‘ ‘

San Diego State Recap
Won 3-2

The Matadors ended the San Diego Classic II Sunday afternoon by beating the home team, San Diego State, 3-2. Duran pitched her third complete game of the weekend and only allowed two hits. Rymer drove in the game winning run in the top of the seventh inning with a single. The Matadors had six hits and left six runners on base.
