The CSUN women’s tennis team (9-0, 3-0 Big West) continued their impressive start to the 2015 season by defeating the University of Texas, El Paso 5-2 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Matador Tennis Complex.
CSUN is 7-0 against Division 1 opponents and has two wins over NAIA opposition in
Westmont. The Matadors are now 9-0 on the season, which is two wins shy of matching the 2001 team’s 11-0 start in the Big Sky Conference that saw them win the conference title.
In doubles play, sophomores Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei improved to 9-0 on the season by winning their match 8-2. The win improved their overall record in doubles play to 26-3 at CSUN. Junior Jessica Warren and senior Criss Rodriguez won 8-3 in the third draw. They are currently 6-2 in 2015.
In singles play, Freshman Kiryang Kim won 4-6, 6-4, 3-2 (5) in the third draw. Rodriguez played in the fourth draw and defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-3 to improve to 7-1 in singles play. Poei won 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in the fifth draw to improve to 7-1 on the season. In the final draw, Warren won 6-1, 6-1. Her victory improved her record to 7-1 in singles play.
The Matadors look to remain undefeated in conference play when they host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday, March 13 at the Matador Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled at 1 p.m.
