As the spring semester rolls around so do the crime alert bulletins in and around the CSUN community. Two crimes were reported within the two weeks before school started.

An unidentified suspect allegedly brandished a firearm during a confrontation at the Redwood Hall Matadome on Jan. 16 around 10 p.m. No injuries were reported.

According to a crime alert bulletin, a group of seven to eight male reportedly black, white and Latino along with a black female entered the Matadome as several members of the CSUN basketball team were practicing. The unknown individuals were then asked to leave. The primary suspect, however, became enraged before allegedly pulling out a handgun from his sweater pocket.

The suspect is tall (more than 6 feet) and reportedly wore a black, hooded sweatshirt with shorts at the time of the incident. The suspects have yet to be found as police continue their investigation.

“We are investigating the incident right now but I am unable to release any of the information from our investigation,” said Detective Sgt. Dana Archer of the CSUN Police Investigations Unit.

The crime alert bulletin also said that the same groups of individuals were seen around the Matadome on Jan. 15, the day prior to the incident.

A visit to Redwood Hall’s Matadome on Jan. 24 revealed that doors to the gym were still unlocked and open. Basketball practice was in progress. An individual at the practice informed incomers that it was a closed practice and that they must leave.

Two employees at the Athletics Department denied knowing any more information about the incident, other than what the crime alert bulletins stated. Department officials said they did not know of any precautions that are being taken in the aftermath of the incident.

Special Assistant to the Chief of Police and spokesperson for the Crime Prevention and Community Relations Unit, Christina Villalobos, said the same. “I do not know, there may be (a crime prevention strategy at the Matadome), but I’m not aware of any,” she said.

Another crime alert bulletin said two female students were robbed as they walked near the golf course on the corner of Plummer and Bertrand Streets on Jan. 24 at approximately 12:20 p.m.

The suspects, two unknown males, approached the victims and asked for directions. They took the victims’ personal property and then fled the scene in a vehicle driven by an unidentified female.

The suspects are described as two black males between the ages of 20 and 23. Both reportedly weigh around 180 pounds.

One of the suspects, according to the bulletin, stands at around 6 feet tall. He has short hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. At the time of the incident, he wore dark blue jeans and a white T-Shirt under a gray, hooded sweatshirt.

The second suspect is also reportedly around 6 feet tall. He has a dark complexion, and at the time of the incident had on a black New York Yankees baseball cap. He also wore dark-blue jeans and a white T-Shirt under a black, hooded sweatshirt.

The vehicle in which the suspects fled is described as a newer model white Nissan Altima, possibly from 2003, and was driven by a woman wearing a headscarf. According to the alert, there was a child in the rear seat.

The vehicle was last seen traveling westbound on Plummer Street toward Reseda Boulevard. All suspects are still outstanding.

“I am unable to provide any further information, other than what is on the crime alert bulletin, until the case has been closed. This is our department policy,” Villalobos said.

In regard to the distribution of the crime alert bulletins, Villalobos said, “They were not only posted at the dorms. They were posted at various locations across campus. We are unable to post them on every building but they are posted in the areas which are busiest.”

Such postings are usually located at or around the campus bookstore, University Student Union, and in the residence community. “We look at where the crime happened and judge from there,” Villalobos said.
