A young man adjusted his bandana drawn across his face and the girls walking behind him held their water bottles on their way to catch the Redline subway downtown. In celebration of and in tribute to the music of Sublime, almost a dozen bands played short sets at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theatre in Hollywood on Oct. 24 to benefit the MusiCares MAP Fund. Sublime, one of the most popular bands of the 20-something generation, set the trend for the raw blending of punk rock, reggae, ska, and hip-hop music.

USU board chair resigns from post

The chair of the University Student Union Board of Directors, Bobby Rodgers, resigned from his position March 27 due to personal reasons, he said. "Over the years, I've made a lot of sacrifices, including personal and economical," Rodgers said, who has been at CSUN for nine years as an undergraduate and graduate student with a degree in educational leadership and policy studies.

Car burglaries increase in CSUN parking lots

A recent increase in car burglaries in CSUN parking lots from January to March was reported, said Christina Villalobos, CSUN Police Department spokesperson. Seventeen burglaries were reported to CSUN PD in the past two months, Villalobos said. During the same time period last year, there were only 10 similar burglaries reported, she said.

Even in softball, UCLA wins a close one

The Cal State Northridge softball team showed the UCLA Bruins it was not intimidated by its 28-1 record and showed that the Matadors were certainly capable of hanging with the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. In the end, though, it was UCLA's Kelly Colburn who came through.

A large crowd of students showed up for a panel discussion on the "N" word and its use in academics on March 22 in Manzanita Hall. The event was organized after students voiced concerns about civil rights journalist Carl Fleming, author of "Son of the Rough South," used the "N" word at a CTVA presentation during Black History Month.

The latest episode surrounding the Nationals involves their star left fielder (or second baseman, depending who you talk to) Soriano and general manager Jim Bowden.
