Western gangs in the Australian outback in ‘The Proposition’

Joseph Wilson May 5, 2006
Most western movies I've seen have cowboys ride around saving towns and getting into dusty gun battles that end with the outlaw or corrupt sheriff sprawled on the ground with a gunshot, or twelve, to keep them there. These movies seldom show the grim and ugly reality that was frontier living.

MI:3; oh wow, chases and explosions

Albert Aguilera May 5, 2006
OK so my favorite Scientologist, Tom Cruise, is back in the role of agent Ethan Hunt. The third installment to "Mission: Impossible" is non-stop action. As if it were set to a timer, every 15 minutes or so would feature a chase scene on foot, car or chopper, accompanied by an explosion, shoot- out or fight between two or more people.

The Call of Kilimanjaro By Daniel O'Brien Do you hear the call of Kilimanjaro? I do. She beckons to me like a lover. O, how I long to go to her: To cross the Shira Plateau, That I may kneel at her feet, I will open my mouth in song and I will praise her with my lips.

Nestled in the meandering roads of Silverlake, a line of people left the entrance and wound around the block. Fans compared notes on previous Johnston shows, the new biographical documentary film "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and if Johnston would play the song they enjoyed most.

It has been a long four years, but the wait is finally over. The 2006 FIFA World Cup is finally just a month away, and it is a tournament that is bound to have some surprises this summer. There are always the favorite picks to win the tournament. Safe predictions are usually Brazil or Argentina.

Letter to the editor

defaultuser May 4, 2006
Last weekend's NFL draft saw few major surprises on the first day after the Houston Texans announced early that they had already come to a contract agreement with North Carolina State's defensive end Mario Williams as the number one overall pick. USC running back Reggie Bush looked like a sure bet to go number one at first, but after not accepting the offer from the Texans before the draft he fell into the lap of the New Orleans Saints who were quick to snag him with the number two pick.
