?When students are consistently not performing well, there is reason to believe there is something wrong with the system. How is it that students are receiving more and more A grades, yet they are not learning as much? Grade inflation is gradually taking place at the CSUN campus "? for reasons not always clear," stated a report published by the CSUN Council of Chairs.

The Freshman Connection reaches out to new students

The Freshman Connection, a 1-year-old CSUN program directed toward first-time freshmen, had an event in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union yesterday. The flyer for the event said, "Come celebrate your first semester at CSUN!" Each of the 299 students who are part of the Freshman Connection this year were supposed to participate in the event, which displayed presentations from classes within the program, said Cheryl Spector, Director of Academic First Year Experiences at CSUN.

Matadors perform well at Loyola

The Cal State Northridge women's swim team competed in the third annual Pentathlon hosted by Loyola Marymount University at the Burns Aquatic Center on Nov. 11. The Matadors competed against LMU and the Pepperdine Waves and performed well. In the 200-yard freestyle, CSUN junior Sanda Jukic finished in first place with a time of 1:57.

The California Faculty Association and California State University students from all 23 campuses joined together to protest CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed's job performance and tuition fee increases yesterday in Long Beach. Outspoken protestors rallied the streets from Ocean Avenue to the CSU's waterfront headquarters.

When John Legend toured with his debut CD "Get Lifted," he incorporated a segment where he played songs he had written for other artists. Whether it was showboating or just in case somebody in the audience did not know much about his music is yet to be determined.

Atlanta at Baltimore J: The way the Falcons have been playing lately, the natural pick would be the Ravens. The Ravens, however, have not exactly been the steadiest team in the league either, almost losing to the Titans last week. Having said that, with both starting defensive ends injured for the Falcons and the inability of their receivers to catch the football, Baltimore will probably be able to win this game.

If nothing else, while watching "Strangers With Candy" one can be glad that their high school experience was not nearly as bad as Jerri Blank's, whose second run through school is shown in the film. Jerri (Amy Sedaris) is an ex-con in her 40s who goes back to high school in the 21st century.

Pow wow raises awareness of Native American veterans

The American Indian Student Association at CSUN honored Indigenous Awareness Month by having a pow wow during Veteran's Day weekend, about two weeks after Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante announced that November will now be recognized as American Indian Heritage Month in California.
