Cesar Chavez Day can’t be moved

While I was lying out at the beach on Monday enjoying our day off to observe Cesar Chavez Day, it occurred to me that we rarely, if ever, receive a day off from school. In fact, just a month and half earlier all my friends were off from work for President's Day while I dashed off to school.

The second-ranked Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team had their record-setting win streak snapped on Tuesday night in a 3-1 upset by No. 9 UC Irvine 28-30, 30-24, 42-40, 30-18 at the Bren Center. "We knew Irvine was a good team," said head coach Jeff Campbell.

MEChA prepares high school students for college

About 400 students from 20 middle and high schools visited CSUN on Saturday for the 10th Annual Raza Youth Conference organized by MEChA. The theme for the daylong event was "The empowerment of our community begins with you." "Our purpose is to inform students of the process of higher education," said sophomore Spanish major Angelica Amezcua, one of the main organizers of the event.

Northridge defeated by UC Santa Barbara in conference opener

The first Big West Conference series did not go the way the CSUN Matador baseball team would've liked. The Matadors showed plenty of fight in its weekend series against the host UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, though Santa Barbara still had enough in its tank to win all three games at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium by scores of 9-5, 8-7, and 10-6.

MIC offers Life Skills courses

In an effort to enhance the learning experience at CSUN, the Leadership Institute, located in the Matador Involvement Center, is offering free courses and lectures through a program called Life Skills. Life Skills is collaboration between the University Student Union and MIC, and presents monthly courses, lectures and seminars with keynote speakers and professionals from different fields.

CSUN defeated by Long Beach, Irvine

The CSUN women's tennis team has lost four consecutive matches, including two crucial Big West Conference meetings this past weekend. The No. 68 nationally-ranked Matadors fell to No. 49 California State University, Long Beach, 6-1, and No. 60 University of California, Irvine, 5-2.
