Story by Jonathan Andrade Last season’s 4-26 record wasn’t  what the CSUN women’s basketball team was looking to do during head coach Jason Flowers’ inaugural season. This season, Flowers and the Matadors are looking to bounce back and put CSUN on top of the Big West standings, beginning with the season opener at San Francisco University on Friday. “I know we’re already improved,” Flowers said. “If we can stay focused and continue to work hard, there’s no limit to how… Read more

Education emphasized at Pan African studies department’s 42nd anniversary

By Eniola Jose The importance of education incorporating ethnic studies was emphasized during CSUN’s Pan African studies department’s 42nd anniversary celebration in the USU Grand Salon Saturday. “We have the responsibility to make a difference, we fight for everyone, but we have to remember to fight for ourselves,” said Assemblyman Mike Davis, D-Los Angeles. By Joel R. Paramo Despite the fact that social welfare major Martel Okonji, 22, is up to his neck in homework, he refuses to take a moment to sit down and relax. In his final year at California State University, Northridge, he is active in many organizations on campus, but they’re all inclusive to his major. Okonji has overcome adversity and depression and has blossomed into an active member of the LGBT Alliance, the Queer People of Color Conference, and… Read more

Smash capitalism

The fact that more people are now familiar with the term “debt ceiling” than “capitalism” is indicative of the level of ignorance or indifference. Capitalism is not the “free market” — we have a not-so-invisible hand giving million dollar salaries, billion dollar subsidies, and trillion dollar bailouts to people that don’t deserve to be called human beings. Capitalism is paper controlling labor. Paper in the form of $,  ¥, €, ? or debt in the form of a mortgage, car… Read more

Biology major uses past tragedies to reach dreams of medical school

Matt Landesman, 21, is currently a biology major who will be graduating early to enter medical school. Erin Herle / Contributor

By Erin Herle For most people, college is a time to figure out their options and where life takes them. Although encouraged, most do not find passion in what they choose for a career, but Matthew Landesman is an exception. Landesman, 21, is a biology major and pre-med student set to graduate within three and a half years. One could say he is lucky for having carved his path at a young age but it was not by choice that… Read more

Learning leadership on the mountains

Courtesy of George Taylor

It’s 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 3, and the alarm on Tom’s watch is blaring. I wake up and bring just enough of myself out of my zero-degree sleeping bag to eat cereal with powdered milk, a meal prepared the night before to save time. “What am I doing?” I think as I realize the scope of today’s endeavor, along with that of the expedition before and after today. That was the morning of the 22nd day in the Waddington Range… Read more

Lower Tuitions Fee; Don’t Subsidize the Rec Center

When the new Recreational Center is opened, all students will be automatically given membership.  This is not, however, kindness. This comes not as a special offer, but rather as a forced purchase. Students will be unable to opt out of paying for the membership, regardless of whether they use it. What this means, in essence, is that those who don’t use it will be subsidizing those who do. Why are we standing for this? This was not a necessity for… Read more

Letter to the Editor: It’s time to eat real, America!

Illustration by: Kristin Hugo / Opinions Editor

What better way to describe the purpose of Food Day than what was voiced by its sponsors, “we want Americans to cook real foods for their families again”. Over the last thirty years, the American diet has transformed from one that involved the preparation of fresh applesauce by our grandmothers to one that is ordered from fast-food restaurants, highly processed and nutritionally empty. Convenience, instead of wholesomeness, has become our priority in foods. The American diet, high in calories and… Read more
