CSUN commits costly errors, falls to UC Davis

Junior Cal Vogelsang stretches to make the out at first against UC Davis Friday. Although Vogelsang managed to make the out, CSUN failed to keep the Aggies off the base paths and lost 9-5.

Northridge has had a knack of getting on the scoreboard early at Matador Field but Friday was an exception. The Matadors (22-25, 9-10 Big West) allowed UC Davis (23-28, 9-10) to build up a nine-run lead through the first four innings en route to a 9-5 conference loss. CSUN waited until it was plenty behind to even tally its first hit of the day in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Alex Muren gave up nine runs… Read more

Women’s Volleyball CSUN head coach Jeff Stork and his women’s volleyball team ended the 2011 season with the third-place spot in the Big West Conference. After finishing the year with an overall record of 16-13 and 9-7 in the Big West, Stork is looking to build on what he said was a great season. “We had been going through some adjustments of decreased funding for the past four to five years and we were able to do some things that… Read more

Baseball: CSUN starts home stretch vs. UCI

CSUN only came away with six Big West Conference wins in head coach Matt Curtis’ inaugural season last year. This year, with nine conference games remaining, the Matadors (20-23, 7-8 Big West) have already passed their 2011 mark and are in the mix to make a move for double figures in the win column. “We have to go in trying to win every series if not every game,” said freshman Ryan Raslowsky. “We know we’re better than all these teams… Read more

CSUN looked to have the advantage heading into the series over UC Riverside and quickly showed its dominance taking the first two games of the weekend for the series win, beginning with a 8-7 victory in 10 innings. The offense provided the runs while the pitching managed to stave off a Highlander comeback in the first meeting then shut down UCR’s lineup in Saturday’s matchup in a 7-3 win. The Matadors have to like their chances heading into a series against a team that’s ranked lower than they are in the Big West Conference. Northridge (18-22, 5-7 Big West) has already faced the top four ranked teams in the conference and will next face the seventh-ranked UC Riverside (14-24, 4-8) this weekend at Cunningham Stadium. The Matadors have avoided sweeps against all the top teams so far this season and even stole the series against third-ranked Cal Poly. CSUN… Read more

Since conference play started, the Matador offense has kept up with what the best the Big West Conference has to offer. After a series win over then-ranked Cal Poly and only needing one big inning to take the series from Long Beach State, CSUN is in the hunt for post-season play. Last season, the Matadors (18-22, 5-7 Big West) only mustered up a 6-18 conference record in head coach Matt Curtis’ inaugural season and are only two wins away from… Read more

Baseball: CSUN offense can’t keep up with Dirtbag bats in latter innings

fasf

Heading into Friday’s game, the visiting Long Beach State Dirtbags had only managed to hit one ball beyond the outfield walls this year. But they hadn’t played at Matador Field. With the walls 325-feet away down the line, a three-run dinger by LBSU’s Juan Avila made all the difference as the CSUN bats were unable to keep up with the Dirtbags and fell 8-2. “Bottom line was (Long Beach) outplayed us today,” CSUN head coach Matt Curtis said. “They swung… Read more
