A group of approximately 20 protesters marched from Harold Henry Park on Sunday afternoon to the Getty House, Mayor Karen Bass’ residence. LAPD arrived to disperse the crowd, arresting one man.
Protesters marched through the otherwise quiet Wilshire neighborhood shouting, “ICE out of LA,” and pointing out the difference of wealth in the upscale neighborhood compared to other Angeleno neighborhoods.
Residents watched from the porches of their homes, with one couple waving an anti-Trump flag from their yard. Tracy, a resident, passed out water to the protesters.
“It’s a must for people to have their voices heard. It’s what this country was founded on,” Tracy said.
The group’s destination was the Getty House, which is a landmark of Los Angeles and the house of the officiated mayor of the county – it is essentially the White House of Los Angeles and is owned by the city itself.
LAPD showed up with batons shortly after the protesters arrived, citing an unlawful assembly based on an ordinance that prohibits protesting within 300-feet of private homes, including the Getty House.
One protester, who was a medic for the group, was arrested after he was told to move away by police. The same protester was previously run over by police at the “No Kings” protest on Oct. 18.
“It was intimidating,” said Conor Brody, a protester with the group. “They tackled our medic even though none of us were breaking the law. We pay taxes on that house as citizens, so it’s our right to protest.”
Protesters thought Bass was home at the time based on the cars in the driveway, but the mayor did not make an appearance.
