CSUN Farmers Market on hold

At the beginning of last week I learned some disappointing news. It was brought to my attention that President Koester removed the CSUN Farmers Market from her agenda. In other words, we are not having a farmers market on campus.

This news arrived unexpectedly. Up until now all seemed to be going well. Although there had been some setbacks things were moving forward — slowly – but forward.

I don’t have all the details but I am afraid this is another side effect of the budget crisis. What I do know is that several students have begun to take action and they need your support.

Student action is necessary to show Koester that students fully support the idea of a weekly farmers market on campus. Stephany Stamatis, an urban planning major, has started an online petition. Please take a minute to read over it and and sign it.

Here is my opinion on the whole matter (whether it matters or not)… There are bigger problems faced by the campus and clearly farmers market is not on the “to-resolve” issue. I read the article on the campus sustainability website and it does not clearly articulate the following 4 points

    a. The Need
    b. Satisfying that Need
    c. A Rational Cost to Satisfy that Need
    d. A Plan of Action Provided that Rational Cost is Justified

Just statistics and petitions based on “Let’s Go Green” do not sell well to the executives.

Secondly, there is a farmers market at the Northridge Mall every Wednesday and we do get local produce… (pointing out) the campus community has other options.

All I am trying to say is that instead of jumping into hasty decisions and petitions to convenience the executives, a more calculated approach should be adapted.
