Make Time for You

Student-parents at CSUN,

Finals are near and so is Thanksgiving break.  It’s a perfect time to catch up on some studying and to prepare for those tests, but it’s just as important to take time out for yourself.  Going to school and taking care of little one’s can take up 150 percent of your time, but finding time to do things for yourself will help not to end up in burn out, or even worse in depressed mode.

Don’t be afraid to ask your partner or even a friend for help.  Even if it’s only for an hour.  That hour can be spent doing what you love to do, whether it’s a dance class, a brisk walk or a bike ride, when you feel that you need extra time for yourself, don’t hesitate to ask for it.

A person needs time to find their individuality, it’s hard to do this without any personal time.  The kids will understand, they shouldn’t think of themselves as the only thing in your life.  Parents are a role model to their children, and an unhappy person, doesn’t make for a good role model.  Remember that the time  you take for yourself is truly helping the house to remain in harmony.

What’s equally important is that your romantic life still remains afloat.  It doesn’t take much time for romance.  Even a morning cup of coffee or tea together can turn into an intimate snuggle.  Doing something small and unexpected can add some flavor and excitement to the romance.  So, this Thanksgiving break, instead of strictly worrying about finals, take some time out to remember you.
