A.S. increases ‘Big Show’ budget to prevent cancellation

Big Show received a $26,559 bonus during Tuesday’s Associated Students senate meeting.  The allocation was approved to prevent this weekend’s campus event from being cancelled. “I think that it is very unfortunate that this happened, but I want every student to have a safe and fun experience,” said President Amanda Flavin. Police services mandated an increase in security, which prompted the steep rise in the event’s budget. New required security measures include more police officers at the event, a portable… Read more

Associated Students may increase funding for California State Student Association

Correction: A.S. did not propose increased fees to support CSSA, but proposed an increase in the amount A.S. gives CSSA per student at CSUN. If passed, the AS would increase funding from 48 cents to $2 per student. The choice to donate to the organization is made independently by each A.S. government, but CSSA is trying to implement more permanent, secure means of funding. CSSA may request the California legislature to make the fee mandatory, despite the organization’s lobbying efforts… Read more

Emotions ran high at Tuesday’s Associated Students (AS) meeting after the board failed to pass an amendment that would allow graduate students to leave meetings an hour early to accommodate class schedules.  Standing rules require senators to be available from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays for their meetings, unintentionally excluding some graduate student representatives whose classes start at 4 p.m.  “I can’t serve (students) effectively because you can’t allow me to go to class and that’s where the… Read more

Preview of freshman convocation, matador statue at Associated Students

Associated Student plans to make new matadors feel welcome at this Thursday’s freshman convocation and the unveiling of the new matador statue. “It’s their symbolic journey into becoming a matador,” said university advisor Tom Piernik. The convocation will welcome the freshman class Thursday night at the Oviatt library with keynote speaker Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle. The matador statue will also be unveiled to the public at the event. Piernik emphasized on the symbolic role of the statue… Read more

Examining the lack of accommodations for breast-feeding women and a new campus tradition were among Associated Students’ first orders of business Tuesday during their first meeting of the semester. The absence of resources for mothers to pump breast milk on campus was critiqued. “If a woman doesn’t have a place to pump, she’s probably going to stop altogether,” former CSUN student Genevieve Calvin said during her 15-minute presentation. The need for accommodation is crucial, Calvin said, with over 90 percent… Read more
