Los Angeles police SWAT officers fired tear gas into a Northridge home Thursday night, flushing out seven people in whom they had no interest and detaining the suspect.
They were seeking a man wanted for an alleged parole violation, police said.
“Seven people, plus the suspect, were eventually taken out of the house,” Lt. Dan Thompson of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Station said this morning.
“Six of those seven people were immediately released. The seventh person was detained for a while, interviewed and then eventually released,” he said.
The suspect, who had been hiding in the house, finally surrendered to SWAT officers about 3 a.m., according to Thompson. His name was not immediately released.
“A gun was recovered at the scene,” Thompson said. “There were no injuries.”
The incident began about 7 p.m. Thursday when LAPD officers tried to serve a felony parole violation warrant on a suspect at a house in the 9600 block of White Oak Ave., said Thompson and LAPD Sgt. Ray Diaz. The man refused to surrender, triggering a barricade situation and officers failed to persuade him to give up.
A SWAT unit was called in later, set up a perimeter around the house and continued the effort to persuade the man to surrender peacefully, Diaz said.
SWAT officers began firing tear gas canisters into the home around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Diaz said.
