Melrose Avenue turned into the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, for seven hours on Sunday, Nov. 23. Thousands of people took a ride through the Upside Down on bikes, skateboards and scooters on the closed street.
CicLAvia teamed up with Netflix with the theme “Stranger Things” for its 64th bike ride event in anticipation of the series’ fifth season release.
Many people dressed up as their favorite characters or in ‘80’s themed costumes.
One Last Ride featured a quest challenge to collect pins, photo ops with set pieces and characters and merchandise booths, with many local businesses partaking in the festivities.
At the Fairfax Avenue end, a stage and giant screen was set up. The event kicked off with exclusive footage from the new season and performances by The Boombox Heroes and The Flux Capacitors.
Mayor Karen Bass made an appearance to thank the Hollywood film industry and rode a bike with attendees. In a speech before the large crowd, Bass said over 15 television shows have returned to filming in Los Angeles.
Bass also shared excitement for similar events like CicLAvia next year.
“We will have the world here during the World Cup, and I hope we have events like this across the city,” Bass said. “Everybody celebrates sports, being active and reclaiming our streets.”
Bass wished everyone a good ride and a wonderful holiday season before taking off on her bike.
