Newly installed speed bumps in CSUN parking structures are already needing repair.

Whole speed bumps were removed and others were partially missing as students’ cars swerved to avoid the bumps during the busy first week of school.

ABC Contractors installed the speed bumps in B3, B5, and G3 for $30,000 total.  However, the adhesive did not hold during the weekend before school started and Parking and Transportation Services started removing some of the speed bumps Monday.

“We don’t know if the contractors had a bad batch of concrete,” said Alfredo Fernandez, captain for Parking and Transportation Services.  “We’re looking at different adhesives.”

The contractor is not charging CSUN extra for the repairs.  Repairs are expected to take place over the Labor Day holiday as it will give the new adhesive 72 hours to cure and settle.

The bumps were installed as part of a general improvement project over the summer.  The project also involved re-striping stop lines and parking stalls, cleanup of oil and gum removal.

No cars were reported damaged during the removal of the original adhesive.

“We originally had bots dots that were meant to slow down drivers,” Fernandez said.  “It just didn’t work.”

Bots dots were strips of yellow dots that traversed the road and were to discourage speeding.

The early feedback has been positive.

“The only safe speed in the garage is five miles per hour,” Fernandez said.  “We know the speed bumps are working.”
