“On the morning of March 4, Professor Karren Baird-Olson was teaching one of her American Indian Studies classes and gave students a choice to join in on the “Day of Action.”
“I had learned through advertising that a demonstration was going to take place throughout the day,” Olson said.”
Olson then walked and stood in front of the Oviatt Library with her students to listen to speakers talk about the reasons students where out demonstrating.
CSUN professor removes Thailand sex tourism content from website after community indignation April 25, 2010
Under pressure from the CSUN community, tenured economics professor Kenneth Ng removed content from his website that focused on sex-tourism in Thailand.
Provost Harry Hellenbrand released a statement Friday saying that Ng, after considering the “deleterious effect it had on the university’s reputation not because he considered the subject matter and content as unsuitable for public discourse, public discussion, or public debate about this topic,” agreed to remove his site Bigbabykenny.com.
CSUN MEChA members claim harassment by undercover LAPD officers October 02, 2009
CSUN student organization, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) said they were made the target of surveillance during their first meeting of this semester.
Faculty adviser of MEChA, Dr. Jorge Garcia said that on Sept. 2 they were holding their first meeting on the lawn between Jerome Richfield Hall and Barman Hall when they observed the surveillance groups.
Grad student moves forward November 10, 2009
Mass communications graduate student Esha Momeni, formerly imprisoned in Iran, revealed she is planning an exhibition about her time in prison, while speaking at an event in her honor at CSUN.
The event, From CSUN to Iran and Back Again, which was held at the University Student Union’s Northridge Center on Monday evening, gave Momeni an opportunity to recount her story and share her future plans.
Dr. Maya Angelou delivers message of hope, inspiration October 21, 2009
No one is born with courage, but we are all born with the ability to be courageous, was the first of many messages part of the lecture “An Evening with Dr. Maya Angelou.”
Angelou spoke at the Matadome to a packed crowd of about 2,300 students and faculty. The University Student Union (USU) and Associated Students (A.S.) sponsored the lecture.
Dorothy Barresi, a professor in the English department and a poet/critic introduced Angelou to a crowd of thousands.
India.Arie brings CSUN together at outdoor concert September 27, 2009
For many fans of India Arie, Friday night’s concert did not disappoint.
For Ron Robinson, a senior finance major, who attended the concert with some of his friends, the concert was a pleasant surprise.
“I decided to come with some of my home girls. You know, because it’s free,” he said. “I can’t say that I’ve really listened to a lot of her music. But [the show] was really nice. I really got into it.”

The white fold-out chairs lining the Oviatt Lawn were filled Thursday evening as the 2009 Freshman Convocation took place welcoming all new students to CSUN with an hour-long ceremony and a few words from last spring’s outstanding graduating senior Antonio Mendez and keynote speaker Steve Lopez.
“This was a very welcoming event,” said Carlos Barrera, an 18-year-old business major. “It really motivated me to keep on studying and keep looking for a career path.”
Terry Piper, vice president of Student Affairs at CSUN, was the narrator for the event introducing the platform party and calling university President Jolene Koester to the podium. Koester welcomed and congratulated the incoming freshman with a brief speech.

Students should be ready to deal with the effects of the budget cutbacks that are expected to affect the California State University system over several years said University President Jolene Koester at The Presidents Town Hall Meeting yesterday.
The event, which took place at the University Student Union’s Grand Salon, gave students the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions to the university presidents panel. The panel included Koester, Associated Students(A.S.) President Abel Pacheco and Faculty President Jennifer Matos.
“The best thing you can do as students is focus, choose a major and get out of here,” said Koester, when asked what advice she could give students who are currently dealing with the cutbacks.

Flu season brings extra worries of H1N1 September 02, 2009
“‘Be prepared, not scared,’ is the motto of the CSUN Klotz Student Health Center,” Dr. Yolanda Chassiakos, director of the Health Center, said in response to a question about the H1N1 swine flu.
“We have a pandemic plan available consisting of three elements: prevention, safety through education and care,” she continued. “Every year viruses start in the Southern Hemisphere and then spread to the Northern Hemisphere. This year, it just happens to be seasonal flu (with) the addition of the H1N1 virus.”
A.S. launches transportation subsidy to lessen pricey commute for students August 29, 2009
Associated Students will be offering a $20 public transportation subsidy for students, reducing the price of a monthly Metro bus pass to $16 a month.
The subsidy program, which started in July, has already received positive feedback from student riders, and it is expected to continue, said Ken Etter, A.S. manager of support services.
Students rally in Sacramento against budget cuts March 23, 2010
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – CSUN students along with other students and faculty from across the Golden State who rallied on the steps of the Capitol against budget cuts were encouraged by speakers to continue their activism even after the March in March event was over.
The event’s master of ceremonies Reid Milburn, student senate for California community colleges president, said change depended on the more than 15,000 students including CSUN students that marched to the Capitol on March 22.

CSUN student Aandrea Reblynn, a psychology major who landed a main role in the presently running theatre production “Six Characters in Search of an Author” died Nov. 24 in a motorcycle accident.
Reblynn, a 27-year-old junior at the time of death, was entering the U.S. Highway 101 onramp in Hollywood at Highland Avenue when her motorcycle was struck by a motor vehicle from behind, according to a source close to Reblynn.
